Through the project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions", awareness has been raised and behavior of farmers in the province has changed in production, towards green, environmentally friendly agriculture.
The project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions" was implemented by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union in 15 provinces and cities nationwide.
In Ninh Binh, the Project will be implemented by the Provincial Farmers' Association from 2022 in 9 participating communes, wards and towns including: Thach Binh, Quynh Luu, Nho Quan town (Nho Quan district); Gia Hoa, Gia Thinh, Gia Phu (Gia Vien district); Khanh Hoa, Khanh Cong, Yen Ninh town (Yen Khanh district).
The project focuses on propaganda, mobilization, and guidance for farmer members to apply 5 technical solutions for environmentally friendly organic waste treatment: fermenting crop by-products for animal feed, composting organic fertilizer from crop by-products in the fields, raising chickens on thick biological bedding, raising calcium worms, and raising earthworms.
These are quite simple, easy-to-do, and environmentally friendly techniques. Farmers can take advantage of post-harvest agricultural by-products to ferment crop by-products into nutritious feed for livestock; compost organic fertilizer from straw and crop by-products right in the field; raise calcium worms, raise earthworms with pig manure, buffalo, cow, chicken manure, leftover food, etc. to create a new source of food for livestock and a valuable source of organic fertilizer; raise chickens on thick biological bedding to reduce the work of cleaning the coop, eliminate unpleasant odors in the coop, the chickens grow quickly, are healthy, and are less susceptible to diseases.
After the Project launch and training of source trainers, the Farmers' Associations of communes and towns have actively implemented many activities within the framework of the Project. Comrade Dao Quang Phu, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thach Binh Commune, Nho Quan District, said: The Association has conducted surveys and selected members and farmers in the area who are engaged in suitable farming and livestock raising activities to participate in technical training courses and build models for environmentally friendly organic waste treatment. At the same time, a propaganda team of 5 members and a waste collection team of 7 members have been established to periodically meet monthly to propagate and mobilize for the replication of the Project. The implementation of the project has been supported by members and local people. Up to now, the commune has had 65 models applying technical solutions for environmentally friendly organic waste treatment and all models have brought about practical results.
Sharing the effectiveness of the method of fermenting crop by-products as animal feed, Mr. Tran Khanh Huy, Thach Binh commune said: Previously, my family raised cows according to the old practice of natural grazing, which was not very effective and required a lot of labor. Therefore, when the Farmers' Association at all levels trained and instructed on the technique of fermenting crop by-products as animal feed, my family boldly applied it. Agricultural by-products after each harvest such as corn are collected, processed according to the correct process and after 21 days will be used as feed for buffaloes and cows, rich in nutrients, can be stored for 6-7 months. Since applying the new method, my family has been proactive in the source of food, overcoming the shortage of food for buffaloes and cows in winter, saving costs, reducing labor, and the herd of cows grows quickly and healthily. Cow waste does not have an unpleasant smell like before, and the surrounding environment has been significantly improved.
Regarding the results of the Project implementation in the province, Mr. Hoang Ngoc Chinh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association, said: After more than 2 years of implementation, the Project has organized 2 training courses for source lecturers for 30 cadres and core farmer members from localities participating in the Project; trained nearly 900 farmer members; organized 4 field trips to study organic waste collection and treatment models between communes in 3 districts of Nho Quan, Gia Vien, Yen Khanh... Implementing the Project, Farmers' Associations at all levels have supported the construction of more than 540 models applying environmentally friendly waste treatment techniques. From the initially built models, up to now, more than 900 models have been replicated in the province. The implementation of the Project has helped farmers know how to classify and treat waste, reduce the burning of straw and crop by-products after harvest, gradually solve the waste of excess food and livestock waste; save production costs, reduce chemical fertilizers, reduce labor and improve efficiency in agricultural production.
In the coming time, within the framework of the Project, Farmers' Associations at all levels in the province will continue to promote propaganda, organize tours, and learn from the experiences of organic waste collection and treatment models in localities that are being implemented, helping members and farmers learn and replicate the model. Thereby, it will contribute to raising awareness, changing people's behavior and habits in treating organic waste towards environmental protection and responding to current climate change.
