As a mountainous and island district located in the Southeast of Quang Ninh province, Van Don has a natural land area of over 2,000km2, of which 551.3km2 is land, with more than 600 large and small islands, having an important strategic position in terms of economy, politics, culture, society, national defense and security. In recent years, Van Don has focused all resources, exploited potential, taken advantage of strengths and is gradually changing, becoming more modern and civilized.
Breakthrough in transport infrastructure
One of the important milestones that created a breakthrough for Van Don is the most diverse, synchronous and modern infrastructure system in the province. Many major traffic projects have been completed, becoming symbols of dynamic and creative development.
In 2005, Van Don Bridge was put into use, connecting the island district with the mainland. At the end of 2018, Van Don International Airport with a total investment of 7,463 billion VND came into operation, "opening the sky", "welcoming the world" to Quang Ninh. Van Don International Airport not only attracts domestic and foreign tourists to the locality but also contributes to promoting trade, socio-economic development of the district, the province and the entire Northeast region.
The breakthrough in traffic infrastructure must include the modern and beautiful expressways that have been continuously built and put into use: Ha Long - Mong Cai expressway shortens the distance from Ha Long to Van Don from 90 minutes to 50 minutes, Mong Cai - Van Don expressway with travel time from 120 minutes to 50 minutes. In particular, the nearly 200km long Hai Phong - Mong Cai expressway along Quang Ninh province chooses Van Don as the connection center. Shortening the travel time from Hanoi to Van Don from 5 hours to 2 hours and 30 minutes, the expressway has created a smooth traffic route connecting the provinces with Van Don international airport, contributing to creating a new position and strength for Van Don economic zone.
In particular, the Ao Tien high-class port with a scale of nearly 30 hectares has been put into operation, helping to shorten the time to bring tourists to the islands of Van Don and Co To districts and become a modern gateway to Bai Tu Long Bay, as well as island tourism activities.
The maritime economic zone is moving strongly.
After many years of devoting investment resources and promoting, facilitating, and attracting strategic investors, up to now, Van Don Economic Zone has 64 projects registered for investment using non-budgetary capital, with a total capital of 62,900 billion VND; of which there are 61 domestic investment projects, with a registered capital of 62,683 billion VND; 3 FDI projects with a capital of 226 billion VND.
Van Don Economic Zone gathers many typical projects such as Ao Tien high-class port with an investment capital of 613.3 billion VND; Ao Tien - Cat Linh high-class hotel and resort apartment complex with an investment capital of nearly 4,000 billion VND; Crystal Holidays Harbor Van Don tourism, resort and entertainment complex with an investment capital of over 3,600 billion VND; Monbay Van Don high-class resort - entertainment complex, golf course and residential area interacting with tourism activities with an investment capital of over 24,800 billion VND; Van Hai high-class eco-tourism area with an investment capital of over 1,300 billion VND; New urban area northeast of Cai Rong port with an investment capital of over 1,000 billion VND; Dong Dong reservoir with an investment capital of over 700 billion VND.
Many projects have been completed and put into operation in 2023 such as Ao Tien high-class port, Van Hai eco-tourism resort, Whyndham Garden Sonasea Van Don hotel, Van Don industrial cluster...
In the period of 2021-2023, Van Don's average growth rate reached 27.4%/year, exceeding the target by 2.3%. The economic structure shifted in the right direction of increasing the proportion of services, industry - construction, gradually reducing the proportion of agriculture in production value (the proportion of services accounted for 30.1%; industry - construction accounted for 51.6%; agriculture, forestry and fishery accounted for 18.3%).
Van Don has reached the new rural district finish line in 2022, aiming to upgrade to advanced new rural district in 2023. The cultural and social fields of the district have developed quite comprehensively. The education sector has universalized primary education at the right age at level 3, universalized secondary education at level 3; universalized illiteracy eradication at level 2. The network of disease prevention, examination and treatment has been widely covered. Medical facilities and equipment have been upgraded, the quality of medical examination and treatment services as well as the lives of local people have been increasingly improved...
Towards a green, modern, smart coastal city
According to the Planning of Quang Ninh province for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; Urban development program of Quang Ninh province to 2030; Master plan for socio-economic development of Van Don Economic Zone, Quang Ninh province to 2030, with a vision to 2050, the goal is for Van Don to become a type III urban area by 2025 and a green, modern, smart, and sustainable coastal urban area; achieving the criteria of a type II urban area, with type I infrastructure quality by 2030.
Quang Ninh also aims to build and develop Van Don Economic Zone into one of the driving forces of Vietnam's economic development by 2040, in the leading group of livable cities in the Asia-Pacific region; an international trade and business center of the region, ensuring a clean environment based on the application of green technology, environmentally friendly. At the same time, build this area into a dynamic economic center, focusing on tourism, manufacturing high-end products and services; an attractive place for people to live, work and play in harmony with nature...
Van Don District today is like a big ship that has been and is cutting through the waves on a new journey, a journey of intelligence, promoting potential, constantly developing, on the way to becoming an international maritime economic zone.
