Looking to buy 3 kg of lychee as a gift, Ms. Le Thi My (living in Thu Duc City) was surprised because she went to 3-4 places but still could not buy it.
“My family loves lychees so I tried to buy them but couldn’t find any place selling them after going to all the markets. The seller also announced that they were out of stock early and said that if you wanted to buy them, you had to order in advance at a price of 140,000 VND/kg,” said Ms. My.
Some large-scale fruit stalls have lychees but only have a small quantity left, none of them are priced below 100,000 VND/kg. Not only are there shortages at traditional markets, but supermarkets have also reported "sold out" lychees.
"Last year, lychees were available in all markets and supermarkets for only about 30,000-40,000 VND/kg, but this year, there are not many places that sell them, so the price has increased 3-4 times," said Ms. Ha Bich Hang, a fruit trader at Ba Chieu market (Binh Thanh district).
Thu Duc Agricultural Market Management and Trading Joint Stock Company informed that for about a week now, there has been no fresh lychee coming to the wholesale market. Compared to last year, the output coming to the market this year has decreased sharply. The amount of lychee of all kinds coming to the market this year is 3,447 tons, down 80% compared to the 2023 crop.
