Sputnik on December 31 quoted local sources as saying that two US bases in Al-Hasakah province in northeastern Syria were attacked with rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
"Several rockets fell near residential buildings at the Al-Jabsa oil field in (the town of) Ash Shaddadi, which the US military occupies as its military base," the source confirmed.
The source added that the US base at Kharab al-Jir airport in Al-Hasakah was attacked by drones.
The number of attacks on bases of the US-led international coalition in Iraq, as well as US troops in Syria, has increased significantly in recent months since the Israel-Hamas conflict escalated on October 7, 2023.
As of November 23, 2023, there had been 36 attacks on US forces in Iraq and 37 in Syria, US military officials said.
Shia militant groups operating in Iraq have claimed responsibility for the attacks, while Washington believes they were carried out by pro-Iranian groups.
The US has also carried out airstrikes against Iran-aligned militias in Syria and Iraq in response to a series of attacks on US troops in the two Middle Eastern countries.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the attacks were carried out with Iran's support, and warned that the Pentagon would respond if the attacks continued.
The White House has accused Iran of "actively facilitating" Tehran-backed groups to carry out missile and drone attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria.
Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani warned that the US could face a "serious attack" if Washington does not intervene to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
After the conflict broke out in Gaza, the US deployed a series of weapons and soldiers to the Middle East, including a cruise missile submarine and two aircraft carrier strike groups.
Israel began a "full siege" of the Gaza Strip after a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7. Fighting over the past two months has left thousands dead in Gaza and Israel.
The US has declared that it always supports Israel and is ready to provide military aid to help Israel respond to Hamas. However, Washington also emphasized that Tel Aviv needs to comply with the "laws of war" to avoid civilian casualties.
The US currently maintains 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in neighboring Iraq. Washington says it is carrying out a mission to advise and assist local forces to prevent the rise of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).
Security analysts say there are growing concerns that the Israel-Hamas conflict could spread across the Middle East and make US military bases targets for attack.
