Medical news on July 17: Vaccination rate of many vaccines is still low
According to the Ministry of Health, in the first 5 months of the year, the vaccination rate in the expanded immunization program has not met the schedule.
Vaccine coverage is low
Only the tuberculosis vaccine, measles vaccine and DPT vaccine with diphtheria component have achieved progress according to plan, with a rate of 40%. Meanwhile, the vaccination rate of the "5 in 1" vaccine with diphtheria and pertussis components (DPT-VGB-Hib 3) for children aged 2, 3 and 4 months only reached 36.8%.
Experts recommend that people should vaccinate their children on schedule and with the correct doses. |
Similarly, the vaccination rate for other vaccines such as hepatitis B vaccine within the first 24 hours of birth, encephalitis vaccine, and measles-rubella vaccine is only 26% to 36%. The vaccine gap has caused measles and diphtheria to return and increase since the beginning of the year.
The Ministry of Health's 2025 expanded immunization plan includes tasks that need to be implemented such as purchasing vaccines for routine immunization, supplementary immunization, catch-up immunization, sweep immunization, and deploying new vaccines in expanded immunization in 2025.
Provinces and cities will organize hepatitis B vaccination for newborns at hospitals and health stations, organize vaccination for children with underlying diseases, and children who need screening at hospitals.
Localities organize regular vaccination at least twice a month, carry out catch-up vaccination within the month and vaccinate those who have not been vaccinated or have not received enough doses.
Hanoi: 109 more dengue fever cases and 11 outbreaks in one week
According to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), last week (from July 5 to July 12), the entire city recorded 109 cases of dengue fever in 20 districts; of which Dan Phuong district had the highest number of cases with 43 cases.
Thus, cumulatively from the beginning of 2024 to present, the city has recorded 1,166 cases of dengue fever (an increase of nearly 1.2 times compared to the same period in 2023).
In addition, last week, 11 new dengue fever outbreaks were recorded in 6 districts: Dan Phuong, Ha Dong, Hoai Duc, Phuc Tho, Quoc Oai, Nam Tu Liem, and Thach That.
Since the beginning of 2024, Hanoi has recorded 30 dengue fever outbreaks. There are currently 14 active outbreaks.
Recently, Hanoi CDC has coordinated with relevant units to monitor the investigation and handling of outbreaks in the above districts. Monitoring results show that the insect index in some outbreaks exceeds the high-risk threshold. Therefore, it is forecasted that the number of cases may increase in the coming time and continue to record new outbreaks.
Along with promoting professional activities of CDC Hanoi, in the past week, localities organized 24 environmental sanitation campaigns, disease prevention and control inspections at 77,462 households and 499 other areas (schools, public areas, etc.); treated nearly 11,000 water containers with mosquito larvae.
In order to effectively prevent and control the epidemic in the city, in the coming time, the Hanoi Health Department will continue to closely monitor and promptly detect patients with infectious diseases in the community and decentralized medical examination and treatment facilities to grasp the epidemic situation, organize investigations and promptly handle cases and outbreaks.
Along with that, regularly review, verify, and update case information on the Ministry of Health's software system, and report case data and outbreaks according to regulations.
At the same time, strengthen communication work, provide timely and complete information on the epidemic situation and prevention and control measures.
The city's Department of Health also requested that districts, towns and cities continue to focus on inspection and monitoring in communes and wards with high rates of missed mosquito larvae nests and inadequate rates of spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes.
As for the People's Committee of Dan Phuong district, focus on mobilizing resources to effectively implement epidemic prevention and control work to prevent the epidemic from spreading in the area.
According to the Hanoi CDC, in the past week, the city recorded 31 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, most of which were sporadic cases, and 12 cases of whooping cough. Thus, from the beginning of 2024 to now, Hanoi has had 1,656 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (an increase of 1.7 times compared to the same period in 2023) and 173 cases of whooping cough in 28 districts, towns and cities (while there were no cases recorded in the same period last year).
