USD exchange rate today (March 21): Early morning of March 21, the State Bank announced the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong to the USD increased by 17 VND, currently at 24,807 VND.

Meanwhile, in the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 0.37% to 103.80.

The US dollar rose in recent trading sessions, a day after the US Federal Reserve (Fed) said it was in no rush to cut interest rates further this year due to the volatility surrounding US tariff policy.

In a contrasting development, the EUR fell 0.46% against the USD, to 1.0852 USD after US policymakers decided to keep interest rates unchanged at the policy meeting on March 19 and signaled that they would make two interest rate cuts, each time by 25 basis points, by the end of this year.

“We will not rush into action,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell stressed.

Mr. Powell's comments and the Fed's statement underscore the challenge policymakers face in the face of President Donald Trump's tariff policies and the impact on the economy.

Data released on March 20 showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, suggesting the labor market remained stable in March.

Recent US data has helped ease concerns about slowing US growth, which has sent the greenback down as much as 7% against the euro since mid-January, said Jayati Bharadwaj, global foreign exchange strategist at TD Securities.

Traders are now pricing in about 63 basis points of Fed cuts this year.

With UK inflation remaining above its 2% target, the Bank of England (BoE) has cut borrowing costs less than the European Central Bank and the Fed since last summer, contributing to the country's sluggish growth.

Sterling had earlier risen to a more than four-month high of $1.3015 in early trading, before falling 0.3% on the day to $1.29665.

Meanwhile, the Swedish Central Bank kept its policy rate unchanged at 2.25% as expected, pushing the krona down 0.2% against the USD.

The Japanese yen weakened slightly to 148.79 yen, a day after the Bank of Japan kept interest rates unchanged and warned of growing global economic uncertainty, suggesting the timing of the next rate hike would depend on the fallout from U.S. tariffs.

The Australian dollar fell 0.9% to $0.6303 after Australia's employment rate unexpectedly fell in February, ending an impressive growth streak amid a warming labor market, although the unemployment rate remained stable.

The New Zealand dollar also fell 0.9% to $0.5758, even as data showed the economy had emerged from recession and grew at a faster-than-expected 0.7% pace last quarter.
