Croatia have had a miserable EURO 2024 campaign, losing 0-3 to Spain in their opening match and dropping points in the last minute against Albania and Italy. Although they finished third in Group B, the 2018 World Cup runners-up did not have much hope for long.

After Group C closed early this morning, Croatia's fate was sealed. With just two points and a goal difference of -3, Croatia needed Slovenia or Denmark to lose by three goals to England or Serbia to keep the wait going. However, that did not happen. Both of Group C's final two matches ended in 0-0 draws, meaning the third-placed team in the group finished above Croatia.

Before that, the third-placed teams in Group A (Hungary), Group D (Netherlands), and Group E all had more points than Croatia. Without waiting for the results of the remaining two groups, Croatia was certain to be out of the group of 4 third-placed teams with the best results in the group stage and was officially eliminated.

This is a very sad ending for Croatia as they are a familiar name in major tournaments and have continuously passed the group stage of the World Cup and EURO since 2016. Luka Modric and his teammates have even reached the World Cup semi-finals twice in a row (2018 and 2022).

Thus, Croatia's best historical achievement at EURO is still reaching the quarter-finals in 1996 and 2008. Since EURO expanded to 24 participating teams, Croatia has only been able to go as far as the round of 16 in 2016 and 2021.
