General Sao Sokha requests investigation into alleged match-fixing by Cambodian goalkeeper at AFF Cup

In the second match of Group A of the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship), goalkeeper Vireak Dara of the Cambodian team "gave 2 gifts" to the Singapore players, easily scoring a 2-0 lead in the 9th and 16th minutes. After the match, Cambodian fans heavily criticized goalkeeper Vireak Dara and accused him of match-fixing. The unclear incident caused outrage in the country's football community. Naturalized player Nick Taylor of the Cambodian national team defended his teammate, saying that goalkeeper Vireak Dara was young (only 21 years old), and making mistakes in football was inevitable.

However, Cambodian fans are very upset. One person was quoted by the Khmer Times : "I want to ask the FFC to check and investigate the Cambodian national team goalkeeper, because he deliberately conceded two consecutive goals. How many bank accounts does this individual have? Has the account balance of this person or his relatives increased abnormally? Conceding two goals so easily to the Singapore team constitutes 70 to 90% of selling out."

In response to the fans' anger and showing no signs of cooling down. On December 16, FFC President Sao Sokha spoke up and asked the investigating agencies to get involved to clarify the matter. Sao Sokha also said: "For all the honest officials and players of the team, and not involved in the incident, they have nothing to worry about regarding their integrity."

After 2 opening matches in Group A of the 2024 AFF Cup with 1 draw and 1 loss, the Cambodian team is currently ranked second to last in the table with 1 point. They are preparing to play the 3rd match against East Timor at the Olympic home stadium in Phnom Penh at 5:45 p.m. on December 17.

The focus of this match will be on whether goalkeeper Vireak Dara will play or not after the recent match-fixing allegations. In the final round of the group stage, the Cambodian team will travel to Thailand at 8pm on December 20.
