Step by step professional magician

On the evening of November 10, the 4th National Magic Festival 2023 concluded after 3 days of exciting competition at Ho Chi Minh City Theater and a meaningful discussion at Tran Huu Trang Theater.

Attractive to viewers

According to the Organizing Committee, this year’s festival has 29 entries selected from more than 40 entries by magicians nationwide. Many of these magic acts received enthusiastic applause from the public.

First of all, we must mention the performance "Art and Love for the Fatherland" by female magician Mai Nhi (Circus - Magic Association, Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association). This performance made a strong impression on the audience when expressing the theme of patriotism, through the way of writing the scene script, using body shapes, content structure to use the language of magic to tell the story of a brave female soldier who escaped when she was put to death by the French colonialists.

Next was the performance "Close-up danger, card prophecy" by magician Mai Son. In this performance, the magician transformed a card from a random judge's hand into a portrait of the judge himself, to the amazement and admiration of the audience.

In addition, acts such as: Transforming animals by K'Tay (Nguyen Van Bay - Southern Magic Association); Transforming flower petals and narrow escape by magician Tran Dung (Vung Tau Circus - Magic Troupe); Transforming cars and planes by magician Hoang Khang (Huong Xuan Circus - Magic Troupe, Vinh Long); Integrating traditional music into Chau Van magic by Dinh Thi Lien (Vietnam Circus Federation)... are all creative and thoughtful, surprising and delighting viewers.

Need a stage to promote

As someone with over 30 years of experience in the magic profession, magician Nguyen Van Bay (K'tay) believes that magic needs a regular playground for magicians to meet and exchange expertise. "I hope that in the future there will be many magic competitions to attract a large number of people who love this art to participate," said magician K'tay.

Magician Tran Dung wishes to have a stage dedicated to magic in Ho Chi Minh City to promote high-prize winning performances, and at the same time be a place for young magicians to have a professional stage to perform in order to gain experience and improve their skills.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City - Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy - welcomed the proposal of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association to regularly organize magic competitions and festivals to contribute to improving the quality of this special art form.

Accordingly, the management agencies have had a policy to "dress up" Vietnamese magic professionally. Specifically, during this festival, the Organizing Committee held a seminar on "Orientation and solutions for developing Vietnamese magic" and a class on "Circus - Magic Training in 2023" conducted by the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association.

People's Artist Tong Toan Thang excitedly said: "Despite many difficulties, magicians still attended this festival in Ho Chi Minh City in large numbers, demonstrating the love for the profession of Vietnamese magicians. They still strive to explore and create to improve the quality of art to serve the people. I believe that the field of Vietnamese magic will receive investment and will develop better in the future."

People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui - President of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, Head of the Festival Organizing Committee - commented: "The 4th National Magic Festival in 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to being an opportunity to exchange, learn from experiences, and improve performance quality to meet the audience's enjoyment needs, is also a playground to discover new talents in the field of magic, and evaluate the current status of the magic artist team.

From this festival, we will have policies and orientations for training magic artists, as well as development directions for this art form to contribute to promoting the development of literature and art in general and the development of magic in particular in the trend of international exchange and integration."
