This year's edition of the AFC U17 Championship serves as the official qualifier for the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup as the youth football festival expands the number of participating teams from 24 to 48.
According to the format, the teams finishing first and second in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals and directly qualify for the U17 World Cup. Therefore, the teams all brought their strongest squads, but the tournament still witnessed many interesting surprises.
In Group A, Thailand U17 caused great disappointment when they lost all 3 matches, scored only 2 goals and were eliminated at the bottom of the group. Although not highly rated from the beginning, the poor performance still surprised Thai fans.
Determined 8 teams to enter the quarter-finals of U17 Asia, and also participate in U17 World Cup 2025
In Group B, the group is considered the "group of death" with fierce competition until the last minute. U17 UAE, U17 Japan, U17 Vietnam and U17 Australia all have a chance to continue.
U17 Vietnam led U17 UAE until the 88th minute but conceded a goal at the end of the match and regretfully lost the ticket. U17 Australia, despite defeating U17 Japan, still could not overcome UAE due to inferior sub-index and accepted to be eliminated.
U17 Vietnam lost the chance to attend the World Cup when they were held to a draw by UAE.
However, another Southeast Asian representative in Group C, U17 Indonesia, unexpectedly created an earthquake when they beat Korea in the opening match, then won all 3 matches to earn 9 points. U17 Korea, the championship candidate, played hard but still overcame Yemen to win the ticket to continue with the second place in the group.
The biggest shock happened in Group D, U17 Iran, one of Asia's leading young forces, only won 1 point after 3 matches, giving up their World Cup berths to Tajikistan and North Korea.
The 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup will feature 48 teams, divided into four groups, each consisting of three groups taking place in November. The three group winners and the best second-placed team in each group will advance to the knockout stage.
On other continents, many big names of world football have won the right to participate, including: Ivory Coast, Senegal, Tunisia (Africa), Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Paraguay (South America), England, Belgium, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal (Europe).
