On the evening of April 15, the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union coordinated with relevant units to organize the traditional Bunpimay (Laos) and Chol Chnam Thmey (Cambodia) New Year Festivals at the Lao student dormitory in Ho Chi Minh City.
The festival was attended by representatives of the Lao Consulate and the Cambodian Consulate, leaders of Ho Chi Minh City departments and agencies, and a large number of Lao, Cambodian and Vietnamese students studying in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Lao and Cambodian wrist-tying ceremony is very carefully prepared.
During Tet, the wrist-tying ceremony has a special meaning as a wish for a new year of peace, prosperity, joy and luck.
The festival space is brightly decorated with flags, Buddhist altars, traditional Tet dishes, traditional music,... of all three countries.
Sengchanthavong Khemphone, a Laotian student, could not hide his emotions when he celebrated the traditional New Year right in Ho Chi Minh City: "I am very happy and excited to participate in the traditional New Year of my homeland right here. What touched me and made me miss my homeland the most was the wrist-tying ritual and having many Vietnamese friends attend."
The female student said that every April is the time when Lao and Cambodian people celebrate the New Year, with many traditional rituals such as pouring water to bless, tying threads on wrists, offering incense at pagodas, dancing Lamvong, and enjoying traditional cuisine. These important holidays mark the beginning of the new season, symbolizing purity, happiness and luck.
Students from 3 countries participate in the art performance
Mr. Huynh Thanh Nha, Deputy Director of the Laotian Student Dormitory in Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that this year's Lao-Cambodian traditional New Year has a special mark. In the atmosphere of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the country's unification, this year's series of activities are invested in more elaborately and meaningfully. In the past time, students from other countries and coordinating units have also supported the Khmer community in difficulty in District 3, giving practical gifts, demonstrating the spirit of mutual love.
"This is also an opportunity for Vietnamese students to learn and experience the culture of international friends. They can participate in Lamvong dance, learn how to cook Lao and Cambodian dishes, and write New Year wishes in three languages with their friends," Mr. Nha added.
On this occasion, the organizers also presented 80 gifts worth about 100 million VND to Lao and Cambodian students studying in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City continues to affirm itself as the common home of knowledge, culture and friendship of the three Indochinese countries.
Leaders of universities and organizations in Ho Chi Minh City consider this a part of youth diplomacy and international education, contributing to deepening the traditional relationship between Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia. These programs also create conditions for students to understand each other better and support each other in their studies.
