With a rich cultural and historical tradition, Dong Trieu has continuously made progress in the process of building new rural areas and developing urban areas, contributing to improving both the quality and quantity of people's lives. It has been a long journey with many hardships, determination, and outstanding efforts to turn the former rice-growing countryside into the young city of Quang Ninh today.
Dong Trieu is the western gateway of Quang Ninh, with a very special location with its back leaning against the mountain and facing the big river. Up to now, there are still traces of pagodas such as Quynh Lam pagoda built during the Ly dynasty, with a large stone stele that has survived thousands of years of rain and sun and countless changes of the times. Even further back, during the time of Hai Ba Trung, there was a female general named Le Chan in Ven village, now Thuy An commune...
Dong Trieu is also a large cultural deposit area of the Tran Dynasty with a dense system of temples, pagodas, shrines, and mausoleums, which was specially recognized as a national relic since the first phase in 1962, showing the glorious past here. Through the results of research and archaeology by scientists, many gaps in the Tran Dynasty's heritage have been gradually filled, affirming that Dong Trieu is the homeland of the Tran Dynasty, a dynasty with the most glorious civil and military achievements in our country's history.
Later, the heritage system here, which was destroyed for many reasons, was gradually restored, from An Sinh temple, Ngoa Van hermitage - pagoda (where King Tran Nhan Tong became a Buddha), Thai Mieu (where the Tran royal family was worshiped), Trung Tiet pagoda, Quynh Lam, Canh Huong, Ho Thien, the Tran kings' tombs... An entire Tran heritage area of more than 2,000 hectares has been planned, creating a unique spiritual cultural tourism area. This is also an important component in the Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac relic and scenic complex, which is being proposed by UNESCO to be recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Sharing with us, Mr. Nguyen Quang Nha, former Secretary of the District Party Committee, former Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Trieu District, once expressed: Dong Trieu is a land with a long history of cultural traditions, leaving behind many beautiful and valuable vestiges. That greatly affects the thoughts and perceptions of the people of Dong Trieu in the past and present with the honor and pride in the traditions of their homeland and ancestors.
Continuing that fine tradition, when the French colonialists invaded and exploited Mao Khe mine - the first coal mine of Quang Ninh in Dong Trieu land, the revolutionary movement here was boiling with the birth of the first Communist Party cell of the Mining Region, with many senior comrades of the Party coming to participate in activities, such as Nguyen Van Cu, Hoang Quoc Viet, Nguyen Duc Canh...
Mr. Nha recalled: Dong Trieu War Zone was born very early and took power the earliest in the country. After June 8, 1945, a revolutionary government was established from the district down to the grassroots. From March to August 1945, the War Zone fulfilled its historical mission and achieved great success, not only liberating Dong Trieu but also liberating the entire Northeast region and Hai Phong City. In 1947, the French attacked and occupied Dong Trieu, opening the resistance war against the French by the Dong Trieu army and people. The district's base was in the forest, and in the villages, guerrilla zones were formed, such as Yen Duc and Nguyen Hue guerrillas. The French could sweep the villages, but when they entered, they had to leave. When the guerrillas fought against the sweeps, people clung to the land and villages very tightly.
Dong Trieu in peacetime is proud to be the province's key agricultural district with many important achievements in irrigation, crop restructuring, land consolidation, building concentrated rice and flower cultivation areas, and specialty fruit growing areas... Infrastructure such as electricity, roads, schools, and stations is also focused on, creating outstanding results in the whole province. Dong Trieu has been the first new rural district in the North since 2015. In 2020, 100% of Dong Trieu communes have reached the advanced new rural area and continued the journey of improving quality and building model new rural areas. Thereby, improving farmers' income and living standards, promoting the high-value agricultural economy and sustainable development of the locality.
Regarding urban development, in 2015, Dong Trieu was upgraded from a district to a town, and in 2020 was recognized by the Ministry of Construction as a type III urban area. In recent times, the town has promoted the implementation of three strategic breakthroughs, mobilizing and effectively using resources for investment in construction and infrastructure development. In the period from 2021 to 2025, Dong Trieu has mobilized 27,500 billion VND from the state budget and socialized capital to invest in synchronously upgrading traffic, technical, urban infrastructure, water supply and drainage systems and improving the quality of people's lives.
In terms of transport infrastructure, Dong Trieu currently has regional connecting routes, including National Highway 18, Dong Mai Bridge (connecting Chi Linh City, Hai Duong), Trieu Bridge (connecting Kinh Mon Town, Hai Duong) and upgraded provincial roads. In addition, Lai Xuan Bridge (connecting Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong), the riverside road connecting Ha Long - Hai Phong Expressway to Dong Trieu Town are under construction, promising to open up development prospects for the western region of Quang Ninh. With the perspective of developing urban areas in rural areas, towns in villages, many villages in Dong Trieu are becoming increasingly green - clean - beautiful...
On September 28, 2024, the National Assembly Standing Committee passed a Resolution on the establishment of Dong Trieu city, which officially took effect from November 1, 2024. This is an opportunity for this land rich in cultural and revolutionary traditions to continue its journey of development with a new position, new spirit, and new vitality of today's young city.
