Specialist Doctor I Hoang Vinh Ha, Professional Director of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital, said that the cause of presbyopia is due to aging of the crystalline lens, which is common in most elderly people. People with presbyopia often have poor vision and often have tired eyes when trying to recognize something close. When looking for a long time, they can experience watery eyes, dizziness and headaches.
According to Dr. Vinh Ha, presbyopia occurs in people aged 40 and over, but the symptoms vary depending on each person's existing refractive error. People with presbyopia will need to use glasses to see up close earlier, possibly before the age of 40. In people with presbyopia (no refractive error when looking far away), presbyopia appears around the age of 40. In people with myopia or astigmatism, if at a mild degree (1-2 degrees), around the age of 40, vision will be blurred if wearing glasses, and they will need to remove their glasses to see up close more clearly. People with severe myopia (from 4-5 degrees or more) will need to wear multifocal glasses or lighter glasses to see up close clearly.
The eyes of presbyopic people are very poor at accommodating, weak, and often watery. This is considered a sign of old age. Therefore, presbyopic people should wear glasses regularly to avoid eye strain.
To treat presbyopia, in cases where the lens is cloudy, surgery can be performed to replace the lens; or refractive surgery to change the shape of the cornea. Currently, there is SBK Presbyond surgery technology to adjust the refractive power of the cornea; or Femtosecond Presbyond surgery uses a laser beam to shine on the surface of the cornea to create a corneal flap, adjusting the refractive power. From there, it helps the elderly to have better vision.
“People aged 55-60, after a long time of needing to wear glasses for near vision, suddenly see a decrease in the power of their reading glasses or do not need reading glasses for near vision, this may be a warning sign of cataracts. Patients need to go to an eye specialist to be examined by a doctor and choose the appropriate treatment method,” Dr. Vinh Ha advised.
