From early morning, Mr. Le Van Thiet, residing in Nam Lanh village, Quang Phu commune, brought his tools to the sea to rake shrimp. The tools of Mr. Thiet and the local fishermen are very simple, it is a net made of thin mesh, connected to an iron frame with a wooden handle about 1.5m long.

To catch shrimp, people walk backwards and pull the net along the shore. When they have collected a certain amount of shrimp, they pour it into a prepared can or plastic bucket and continue working.

"This is the beginning of the shrimp season, some people wade along the shore to rake, others use small boats to go further out, looking for thicker shrimp to exploit. In one morning, I collected nearly 100 kg of shrimp, and sold it to traders for more than 1.5 million VND," Mr. Thiet shared.

According to fishermen, although the job is simple, to harvest hundreds of kilograms of shrimp each day, fishermen must have a lot of experience and know how to rake effectively. Soaking in the water for many hours and moving continuously also requires shrimp rakers to be healthy and flexible.

According to records, in recent days, as soon as it was light, along the northern coast of Loan River, from Quang Phu Commune to Quang Dong Commune (Quang Trach District), it was bustling, fishermen waded along the shore, the water was about chest-high, then held tools to scoop up shrimp until almost noon before returning home.

"This year, shrimp have come ashore earlier and appeared densely because the sea has a lot of plankton. Shrimp are in season, the price fluctuates between 20,000-30,000 VND/kg, so fishermen can earn millions if they catch 50-70kg each day," said Mr. Le Van Thang, Nam Lanh village, Quang Phu commune.

Experienced fishermen say that the sea shrimp season in Quang Binh usually lasts from June to September of the lunar calendar. When the shrimp begin to appear in large numbers close to the shore, the water in that area has a different color than the usual clear blue water. Understanding the characteristics of the sea water color, fishermen gather together to catch shrimp from early morning.

In addition to being used as fresh food, sea shrimp is also processed into many forms such as dried for long-term use, made into shrimp floss, salted fish sauce or combined with other delicious dishes, typical of the people of the Central coastal region.

Talking to Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Pham Ngoc Dong, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Phu commune, said that not only fishermen but also many people in Quang Trach district, when they knew about the shrimp season, also gathered at sea to exploit and earn extra income.

Every day, hundreds of people from Quang Dong, Quang Phu, and Canh Duong communes gather in the open sea of Quang Phu commune to harvest shrimp. Those who catch the least can collect 7-10kg, while those with experience can collect hundreds of kilograms of shrimp every day.

Not only people from Quang Phu commune but also from neighboring communes flock here, every day 200-300 people go to the sea to rake shrimp (Photo: Tien Thanh).

"Not only locals but also people from neighboring communes flock here. Every day, 200-300 people go to sea to rake shrimp. The fact that they don't have to go far out to sea or spend long days at sea to earn millions of dong has contributed to improving the lives of fishermen," said Mr. Dong.
