(CLO) The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to expand its campaign to fire officials who oppose him, with dozens of FBI agents who worked on January 6, 2021, during the Capitol riot and subsequent investigations related to him, according to US media reports.
This shows that Mr. Trump is determined to fulfill his vow to take revenge on the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI that he believes were used against him. The new US president has accused the agents of mistreatment during the search of his private home in Mar-a-Lago and their treatment of rioters at the Capitol.
New leaders at the Justice Department have spent the past week compiling a list of people whose jobs at the agency displease Trump for various reasons. Agents and analysts have been warned by FBI leadership that they could be asked to resign or face being fired.
Agents investigating Mr Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified material and those investigating the roughly 1,600 people charged in the Capitol riot have expressed concern that they could face retaliation for doing their jobs.
More than a dozen prosecutors who worked on the January 6 cases were terminated by the Justice Department on Friday, according to CNN. Trump’s purge of DOJ headquarters began last week — just minutes after new interim leaders were sworn in.
At the FBI, at least six senior FBI leaders have been ordered to retire, resign or be fired by next Monday, according to CNN citing sources familiar with the matter.
In late January, Mr. Trump fired more than a dozen prosecutors involved in investigating and prosecuting him while he was out of office. Those fired included prosecutors who worked with former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who conducted two previous investigations into Mr. Trump.
A few days earlier, Mr. Trump also fired at least 12 inspectors general from more than a dozen federal agencies. Accordingly, the fired inspectors general received an email asking them to leave "immediately" from the head of the Office of Presidential Personnel.
In addition, just hours after taking office, Mr. Trump also decided to pardon more than 1,500 people who had been convicted of participating in the Capitol riot. Among those pardoned were leaders of far-right groups such as the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys - who were serving long prison sentences for their roles in the riot.
