Currently, a mid-term literature test for a 10th grade class at a prestigious school in Ho Chi Minh City is circulating on social media, consisting of only one line with 17 words: 'Write an essay discussing the promiscuous lifestyle of today's youth'.
There are many controversial opinions among teachers about the content and requirements of this test.
A literature test that is being circulated on social media refers to the bohemian lifestyle of young people.

Accordingly, the test paper with the content: "Write an essay discussing the current youth lifestyle", is said to be used by Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) for the mid-term test of class 10A25 with a test time of 45 minutes.
On the Ho Chi Minh City student forum, most members expressed their interest in the above test because "the teacher caught the trend so well. It's close to the lives of young people and students, but it's not easy to get points."
Teacher HT, who teaches high school literature in District 5, commented: "The topic requiring 10th graders to write an essay on 'The modern youth's lifestyle' reflects a familiar and topical topic. This topic explores students' thoughts and opinions on the youth's lifestyle, including the positive and negative aspects of the trend of living freely, focusing on form and prestige. This is an age-appropriate topic, helping students practice their thinking, analytical, and argumentative skills."
However, according to this teacher, the word "canvas" can be difficult to understand and easily cause confusion, especially for 10th grade students. Therefore, teachers need to clarify in advance or use more familiar terms so that students can easily access and express their opinions correctly.
A high school literature teacher in Binh Chanh district (HCMC) commented: "If this topic is explained from the word 'backdrop', it will help students outline faster and save time writing the essay. This topic discusses a phenomenon in life that is close to students' psychology, helping them to be interested in doing the essay. The topic is highly differentiated, so teachers grading the essays will be less boring."
In addition, regarding the use of words, the teacher thinks that the word "loi" should be written in lowercase and the word "phong cang" should be in quotation marks because it has a metaphorical meaning. This word should also be placed in a specific context so that students can understand the meaning of the word "ok" better.
This teacher further explained that giving a test with 1 social argumentation question is completely in accordance with current regulations. However, it is not in accordance with the regulations on test time according to Circular 22 on evaluating middle school and high school students, minimum 60 minutes.
Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters contacted the Board of Directors of Mac Dinh Chi High School to confirm and discuss the idea of creating a literature test that mentions "the promiscuous lifestyle of today's youth" but have not yet received a response.
"Phong trang" comes from the image of a backdrop, something that only beautifies the surface, but behind it does not always reflect reality. In today's parlance, "phong trang" refers to a lifestyle that is glamorous on the outside but insincere on the inside. This word often appears on social media, used to satirize those who live a fake life, like to show off their wealth or hide their true nature. Instead of facing the truth, they use glamour to build an image far from reality.
