From 2025, the materials used in the high school graduation exam in Literature may be outside of the textbook. This new way of creating questions forces students to change the way they study and approach problems.
Instead of memorizing sample essays like before, Trinh Quynh Duong, a student at Bac Kan High School (Bac Kan province), said that the literature exam will have many open questions, requiring students to strengthen their reading comprehension skills and apply social knowledge to the essay.
Nguyen Hong Diep, a student at Pham Hong Thai High School (Hanoi), supports the new question format. Diep believes that students will be able to express their personalities and opinions in their essays. Students will not have to memorize or memorize as before, but will have to learn and practice answering questions and doing exercises to be able to implement them effectively.
Literature is the subject that will have the biggest change in the high school graduation exam from 2025. The language used in the exam can be from different textbooks or completely "open", outside the textbook.
This helps assess students' ability to read, understand and perceive texts in real-life situations, avoiding rote learning or mechanical memorization. The material can include passages, poems, or situations related to current events and social life.
Compared to the old program's exam questions, the new way of making questions according to the 2018 General Education Program is attracting public attention. The extra-textbook materials are predicted to end the situation of guessing exam questions and students will no longer learn by rote or study lopsidedly.
Commenting on the reference exam for the Literature subject of the 2025 High School Graduation Exam announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang - teacher at Tran Quang Khai High School (Hung Yen) said that the exam has many innovations in the requirements of each part, differentiating good and excellent students, meeting the requirements of improving the quality of teaching the subject.
According to Ms. Giang, the sample exam ensures that the criteria for selecting materials and question matrix are correct, suitable for the level and awareness of students. The change in content in the writing section plays an important role in reducing the pressure on the first candidates taking the High School Graduation Exam under the 2018 General Education Program.
The number of texts in the official exam may be higher than the reference exam. Therefore, Ms. Giang noted that students need to pay attention to practicing the skills of reading quickly and accurately to ensure effective test-taking.
To achieve high scores in the Literature exam, Dr. Pham Huu Cuong - teacher of the Hoc Mai System noted that students need to try to achieve maximum reading comprehension because this part has 5 questions with 4 points and even though the materials are outside the textbook, if students have good reading comprehension ability and answer questions well, they can absolutely achieve maximum scores in this part.
In the question of writing a 200-word paragraph in the literary argument section, if students have good literary appreciation and practice writing skills, they can completely achieve about 1.75-2 points, which is the maximum for this section.
In the 4-point social argumentation question, requiring students to write a 600-word social argumentation essay, students who want to achieve high scores need to understand social issues, express their views, thoughts, perceptions, and assessments of those social issues. According to Dr. Pham Huu Cuong, students need to demonstrate their sense of civic responsibility and attitude towards social issues such as community life, ethnicity, country, etc.
Along with changes in the Literature exam, the high school graduation exam from 2025 will also have changes, not only testing knowledge but also focusing more on assessing the ability to apply knowledge into practice.
The 2025 high school graduation exam also has many new points to note. Accordingly, the exam will be held in 3 sessions, including: 1 Literature exam, 1 Math exam and 1 optional exam session. Candidates will be arranged according to the optional exam combination to optimize the exam room and exam score.
Compared to previous years, the exam has one less session and two fewer subjects, thereby reducing pressure and social costs while still ensuring exam quality.
