Ho Chi Minh City officially announced information about the 10th grade exam in 2025

Regarding the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training, said that Ho Chi Minh City's view on the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year is to maintain the organization as in previous school years, on the basis of reviewing and ensuring compliance with the regulations on secondary and high school entrance exams of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Specifically, for many years now, the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City has had 3 compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language (in which candidates mainly take the English exam) if they register for the regular 10th grade and specialized and integrated subjects if they register for the specialized and integrated 10th grade.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, choosing a foreign language as the third subject ensures psychological stability and is consistent with the career orientation goals of all students due to the consistent characteristics of the 2018 General Education Program. At the same time, choosing a foreign language meets the goals set by the Politburo in Conclusion 91-KL/TW on gradually making English the second language in schools and aiming for learners to become global citizens in the future.

According to regulations, after the Ministry of Education and Training issues the regulations, the Department of Education and Training will develop a plan for 10th grade enrollment to submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for approval, expected to be issued in February.

In the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year, scheduled to take place in early June, the Department of Education and Training will continue to resolutely implement the innovation of exam questions in the direction of assessing students' abilities. However, the exam questions in the direction of assessing learners' abilities will be more clearly demonstrated by Ho Chi Minh City, in accordance with the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program.

According to the roadmap for implementing the 2018 General Education Program, 9th grade students in the 2024-2025 school year will be the first candidates to participate in the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 with the orientation of the new program.

Based on the structure and reference exam questions for grade 10 in three subjects: math, literature, and English announced by the Department of Education and Training in October 2024, secondary schools develop and implement plans to prepare and review knowledge for students.

According to the roadmap, from the 2025-2026 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will stop organizing specialized classes in 4 high schools including: Gia Dinh (Binh Thanh District), Mac Dinh Chi (District 6), Nguyen Thuong Hien (Tan Binh District), Nguyen Huu Huan (Thu Duc City). Specialized classes will only be held at 2 schools: Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted and Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted.

Regarding the entrance exam for 10th grade specialized education in 2025, the leader of this department said that the orientation of the Department of Education and Training is to replace specialized subjects in physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography with specialized subjects in natural sciences, history and geography, in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program at the secondary level. However, at the high school level, there will be appropriate orientations for students in these specialized classes to choose the right specialized subjects in physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography according to the 2018 General Education Program at the high school level, associated with career orientation.

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced the assessment scope and requirements of the 10th grade exam.

Math

Scope of assessment: The 2018 General Education Program for Secondary School Mathematics includes the following knowledge streams: Geometry and Measurement; Numbers and Algebra; Statistics and Probability.

The test content aims to assess mathematical abilities: Mathematical thinking and reasoning; mathematical problem solving; mathematical modeling.

Assessment orientation: Students know how to apply learned knowledge to solve practical problems. Encourage self-study and creativity, avoid rote learning.

The assessment test content aims to help students orient themselves on some necessary knowledge and skills when entering high school.

Literature

Assessment scope: Reading and writing requirements in the 2018 General Education Program for secondary school level, mainly grades 8 and 9.

Reading Comprehension: Sources: Non-textbook materials include literary texts and one of two types: Argumentative texts or informational texts.

Length: Total length of test materials is not more than 1,300 words.

Write

a) Write a paragraph (about 200 words). One of the two following requirements must be met: Write a paragraph recording your feelings about a poem or a poem; Write a paragraph analyzing the content, the unique features of the work's artistic form and its aesthetic effect.

b) Write an essay. One of the following two requirements must be met:

Write an argumentative essay on a life issue, clearly presenting the issue and the writer's opinion (agree or disagree) on that issue; providing convincing arguments and evidence.

Write an essay on a problem that needs to be solved; present a feasible and convincing solution.

English subject

The assessment of language competence is not only based on students' knowledge of grammar and vocabulary; it requires assessing their ability to understand and apply language knowledge in appropriate contexts, especially real-life situations.

Changing the assessment method needs to be synchronized with the use of appropriate teaching materials, changing the way of teaching and learning English from mainly using Grammar Translation or Direct Method to combining with Communicative Approach and applying language to practical situations.

Target assessment at specific language skills, specific goals for each knowledge stream.

Scope of evaluation:

Phonetics: How to pronounce basic vowels and consonants; How to place word stress correctly; Vocabulary and grammar: Diverse types of vocabulary and word semantics according to the program framework; Grammar points according to the program framework.

Communication, relating to real situations the ability to understand and respond to simple situations of real language.

Reading comprehension: Read a 180-200 word text and find information; Read and fill in the blanks of a 80-100 word text.

Writing: Write correct word form to complete meaningful sentences; Write simple sentences based on given information; Write sentences using grammatical structure and word combination skills.
