Up to now, the above organizations have announced the list of the top 10 best universities in the world in 2024.
Accordingly, there are 6 universities appearing in the top 10 in all 3 rankings, including 2 universities from the UK: Oxford University, Cambridge University and 4 universities from the US: Harvard University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In addition, the National University of Singapore (NUS) is the only Asian representative to be recognized in the top 10 best universities in the world in 2024.
Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings
Announced on September 27, THE's ranking of the top 10 best universities in the world in 2024 has seen significant changes, especially in the top positions. Except for Oxford University, which has been at the top for 8 consecutive years, Stanford University has "usurped" the 2nd place that used to belong to Harvard University, pushing this school down to 4th place. Cambridge University, which used to hold the 3rd position, has now dropped to 5th place and given way to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Outside the top 5, Princeton University and Imperial College London rose 1 and 2 places respectively compared to last year, ranking 6th and 8th. This year, THE ranked more than 1,900 higher education institutions from 108 countries and territories based on information from 134 million citations of 16.5 million scientific publications on the Scopus database and survey results of 68,402 scholars worldwide. Notably, for the first time, China has 2 representatives in the world's top 15: Tsinghua University (ranked 12th) and Peking University (14th).
At the same time, this unit also changed the ranking criteria after 12 years, including renaming 3/5 criteria groups, as well as removing and adding some new component criteria, increasing the total number of criteria in 5 groups to 18, instead of 13 as before. The ranking criteria groups include: teaching, research environment, research quality, technology transfer and international prospects.
Ranking by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy (SRC)
On August 15, SRC also announced the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The top 10 best universities in the world maintained their rankings from last year, with Harvard University leading the rankings for the 21st consecutive year, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all from the US.

The other universities in the top 10 are also located in the UK and the US, respectively: Cambridge University, University of California at Berkeley, Princeton University, Oxford University, Columbia University, California Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago. Notably, on a 100-point scale, Harvard University ranked first with a full score, 25.2 points ahead of the second-placed school and nearly double the gap from the 10th-placed school (53.8 points).

This year, SRC ranked 2,500 higher education institutions and announced the list of the 1,000 best schools in the world. China is the prominent name when it occupies 191 positions in the top 1,000 with Tsinghua University holding the highest position (22nd), surpassing the US (187 schools) for the first time. In addition, China has 2 more representatives in the top 100 best universities in the world for the first time: Central South University (95th) and Nanjing University (96th).
According to SRC, there are 6 criteria for ranking universities, including: number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; number of publications in scientific journals Nature and Science; number of highly cited researchers and number of publications listed in the expanded scientific citation index; number of highly cited researchers and number of publications listed in the social science citation index; average research performance per capita.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Rankings
Previously, on June 28, QS announced the 2024 World University Rankings. Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked first for the 12th consecutive year with 100/100 points, 9.6 points ahead of the 10th ranked University of California at Berkeley. In the top 5, Cambridge University maintained its 2nd place, while Oxford University and Harvard University both rose 1 place to 3rd and 4th place. Stanford University fell 2 places to 5th place.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology tops QS World University Rankings 2024
The top 10 best universities in the world in 2024 recorded some new names compared to last year, such as the National University of Singapore (up 3 places, ranked 8th), the University of California at Berkeley (up 17 places, ranked 10th). Imperial College London maintained its 6th place while the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology rose 2 places, ranked 7th. On the other hand, University College London dropped 1 place to 9th place.

Similar to THE, QS also changed its evaluation method for the first time in nearly 20 years. In addition to the old ranking criteria of academic reputation, citation/faculty ratio, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, QS also evaluated nearly 1,500 higher education institutions based on three new aspects: sustainable development, recruitment results and international research network.
Vietnam mark
Except for the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy University Rankings, Vietnam has representatives appearing in the top best universities in the world. Accordingly, the 6 representatives appearing in THE University Rankings are Duy Tan University, Ton Duc Thang University (ranked 601-800), Hanoi National University (1,201-1,500), Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hue University (ranked 1,501+).
In the QS university rankings, the 5 schools recorded are Duy Tan University (ranked 514), Ton Duc Thang University (721-730), Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi National University (ranked 951-1,000), and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (ranked 1,201-1,400).
