(CLO) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has just undergone surgery to successfully treat a brain hemorrhage related to a fall in October. This is just one of many times the nearly 80-year-old leader has overcome serious illness.
The surgery was successful.
"The surgery was successful without any complications" on Monday night, and President Lula "is recovering well and is under observation" in the intensive care unit, the Syrian-Lebanese hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement.

The bleeding is linked to President Lula's fall on October 19. The 79-year-old leader hit his head after falling in the bathroom of the presidential palace in the capital Brasilia and required several stitches.
The Syrian-Lebanese hospital said President Lula was admitted to its branch in Brasilia on Monday “for imaging tests after experiencing headaches”. Tests showed he had an intracranial hemorrhage.
The Brazilian head of state was then "transferred to the Sao Paulo department of the Syrian-Lebanese hospital, where he underwent a craniotomy to drain the hematoma."
President Lula had to cancel a planned trip to Russia to attend the BRICS Summit and the UN COP29 climate conference this year due to the aforementioned health problem.
President Lula described his accident as "serious" at the time of the fall in a phone call with an official from his Workers' Party.
"I'm fine, I had an accident, but it was my fault. The accident was serious but it didn't affect any sensitive areas," Lula said in the call. "I'm taking care of myself... The doctors said I have to wait at least three or four days to know the extent of the damage caused by the fall."
Since then, President Lula has had a busy schedule, including hosting the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro last month and hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Brasilia. It was only now that he found time to undergo surgery.
Many times victory over disease
President Lula regularly speaks of his good health and has said he wants to "live to 120", despite having faced other health problems in the past.
He underwent successful hip surgery in September 2023." The Brazilian president was also diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011, and recovered the following year after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

Mr Lula, who led the country from 2003 to 2010, won another term by defeating then-far-right President Jair Bolsonaro in the October 2022 election after a tough campaign.
He has not said whether he will run again in 2026, telling CNN last month only that "I'll think about 2026 in 2026."
"It is not the youth who will solve the problems of world governance. What will solve the problems of world governance is the capacity of the leaders, the thinking of the leaders, their health," President Lula said.
"I would be willing to run again. But I hope it won't be necessary. And hopefully we will have other candidates so that we can have a great political renewal in the country and in the world," the Brazilian leader added.
