According to information from the Central External Relations Commission on February 28, on the occasion of Cambodia's successful organization of the 5th Senate election on February 25, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent a congratulatory letter to President of the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen. In the letter, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent to President of the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen, leaders, cadres and party members of the Cambodian People's Party warm congratulations on the great success of the 5th election. "In particular, the Cambodian People's Party has won a great victory in this election. The election results once again affirm the role and position of the Cambodian People's Party under the leadership of Comrade Hun Sen," the letter stated. The General Secretary expressed his belief that with the achievements already made, along with rich experience and support from the Cambodian people, the Cambodian People's Party led by President Hun Sen will continue to gain many new and greater achievements in the cause of protecting, building and developing Cambodia. The head of the Communist Party of Vietnam affirmed that Vietnam will continue to do its utmost together with Cambodia to preserve and foster the good relationship between the two countries, to develop more deeply, practically and effectively in all fields, bringing benefits to the people of the two countries, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world. Previously, on February 26, on the occasion of Cambodia's successful organization of the 5th term Senate election, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue also sent a congratulatory letter to Cambodian Senate President Say Chhum.

Hun Sen's party won overwhelmingly.

The Senate election in Cambodia is not by universal suffrage. The legislature has 62 seats, of which 58 senators are elected by the votes of incumbent members of the National Assembly and members of commune and ward councils. Of the remaining four senatorial seats, two are appointed by the King of Cambodia and two are nominated by the National Assembly through a confidence vote. 11,730 out of 11,747 people on the voter list participated in the vote on February 25. Preliminary vote counting results announced by the National Election Committee of Cambodia showed that the Cambodian People's Party , chaired by Mr. Hun Sen, won 10,052 votes, followed by the Khmer Will Party with 1,394 votes. The two parties FUNCINPEC and National Strength received about 250 votes. After preliminary results, the Cambodian People's Party announced that it will nominate Mr. Hun Sen to hold the position of Senate president next April.
