KIEN GIANG Dried shrimp of Hieu Phat Cooperative is made from natural whiteleg shrimp, raised according to the shrimp-rice intercropping model or areas specializing in improved extensive shrimp farming.

The collective economy in Vinh Thuan district (Kien Giang province) is developing diversely on the basis of promoting the application of science and technology in management, production and business. A typical example is Hieu Phat Agricultural Service Cooperative (Phong Dong commune, Vinh Thuan district).

Hieu Phat Agricultural Service Cooperative (Hieu Phat Cooperative) was established in October 2019. This is one of the cooperatives formed and developed from the start-up movement of rural women in Vinh Thuan district. After more than 4 years of development, the cooperative has had a plan to produce and trade quality products, contributing to job creation and increasing income for people. Many products of the cooperative have become typical products of Vinh Thuan district, of which 05 products have achieved 3-star OCOP.

Ms. Le Thi Kim Thoa, Director of Hieu Phat Cooperative, said that when it was first established, the cooperative had 8 members, and now it has increased to 12 official members. In the early days of its establishment, the cooperative processed dried shrimp from natural whiteleg shrimp sources in the locality. The initial market was still small and did not have many customers, while the dried shrimp market already had many famous production and business establishments in and outside the province.

But with the efforts of the cooperative, through the process of consolidation, restructuring of personnel, changing some processes and market access plans, the cooperative now has many distribution channels, agents, wholesale and retail systems, sales collaborators...

According to Ms. Thoa, dried shrimp products in provinces such as Ca Mau and Tra Vinh are now famous nationwide, with a variety of designs and processing methods. Therefore, the cooperative's dried shrimp products are very difficult to compete in the market. In addition, the dried shrimp line is white-leg shrimp, which is not favored by consumers. Therefore, in order to promote the potential and strengths of the product, the cooperative always strives to apply traditional methods combined with consumer tastes in the direction of products that are both safe and convenient. At the same time, it takes advantage of local raw materials and labor forces to produce products at low prices, meeting consumer tastes.

The characteristic of Hieu Phat Cooperative's dried shrimp products is that they are not dried under direct sunlight like the traditional method, but will combine sun drying and drying to get the finished product faster while still ensuring the quality as well as the characteristic flavor and color of dried shrimp. Hieu Phat dried shrimp is made from natural whiteleg shrimp, raised according to the shrimp-rice intercropping model or areas specializing in improved extensive shrimp farming. The cooperative's dried shrimp products are chewy, naturally sweet, and carry the scent of charcoal during the drying process, which is a characteristic of Hieu Phat dried shrimp.

The products of Hieu Phat Cooperative were born in association with the process of economic restructuring in Vinh Thuan district, starting from the model of monoculture of rice to 1 rice crop, 1 shrimp crop; shrimp intercropped with rice and shrimp specialized areas were formed, especially processed products such as dried shrimp, shrimp paste, snakehead fish paste, dried goby fish, dried snakehead fish... In 2023, Hieu Phat Cooperative helped people consume 150 tons of whiteleg shrimp, 5 tons of snakehead fish, 5 tons of goby fish for processing. The total revenue of the Cooperative in 2023 reached 4 billion VND, with a profit of over 450 million VND.

Through the process of both production and experience, perfecting the processing process, Hieu Phat Cooperative has chosen its own direction. The products of the Cooperative are not simply business products, a model from the start-up movement, but also a combination of local raw materials with the desire to create ecological balance when the value of shrimp is increasingly focused on by people, helping people pay attention to and invest in raising some pure fish species, promoting the traditional local fish sauce making profession...

In the past time, Hieu Phat Cooperative has had the opportunity to participate in trade promotion in the markets of Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Saigon, Can Tho... Up to now, the Cooperative is the only unit in Vinh Thuan district with products achieving 3-star OCOP (dried shrimp, shrimp paste, snakehead fish sauce, dried snakehead fish, dried goby fish) and is honored to be recognized as a typical provincial product in 2021.
