Senior Lieutenant Trieu Kim Van is currently working at Can Thanh Border Guard Station, while Lieutenant Bui Thai Trung is the captain of a border guard ship at Squadron 2. They are among 35 border guards who have just been honored by Ho Chi Minh City as "Young, talented, exemplary green-uniformed soldiers" in 2024.

Close to the people "3 stick, 4 together"
Trieu Kim Van is currently the deputy head of the mass mobilization team at Can Thanh Border Guard Station. No one in his family has a military career, but Van chose to enter the Border Guard Academy. After graduating, he has been working at Can Thanh Border Guard Station since 2021 with the thought of "joining the army to contribute a little bit of my strength to building and protecting the Fatherland".
Being a border guard requires being close to the people, coordinating with local authorities to help people do business, eliminating hunger and reducing poverty is not only an important task but also a goal. From practice, the unit adheres to the motto "3 sticking, 4 together". That is sticking to the unit, sticking to the area, sticking to policies. And "4 together" is eating together, living together, working together, speaking the same language of the people. "This motto helps us grasp the situation of the area and the people well thanks to the information provided by the people" - Van said.
Can Gio has a majority of people living on the sea. Therefore, Van and his teammates advise and coordinate with the local authorities to create many models to help people change their lives. For the people, the unit supports giving them means of livelihood, for students, the border guards have a program to help them go to school.
Each activity and program combines the content of mobilizing and giving gifts to people in difficult circumstances. Therefore, although he has not worked at the station for long, to the people of Can Thanh town (Can Gio district), Van is now like a local child.
Van still remembers the boat fire on the evening of the first day of the Lunar New Year 2022, when he had not long returned to work at the unit. Upon receiving the news from the locals, Van and his teammates quickly rushed out to sea with the locals, fortunately saving the boat in the middle of the night and there were no casualties. At the beginning of 2024, upon receiving news of a fire at a scrap yard, he and his teammates quickly arrived at the scene, rushed into the fire to see if there were any people trapped inside and put out the fire with the locals.

In 2015, the Haiyang 981 drilling rig incident violated Vietnam's sovereignty in the sea, causing Bui Thai Trung (from Nghe An) to decide to take the entrance exam to the Naval Academy. After graduating and being assigned to work at the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard, Trung became captain of the BP 14-12-02 ship of Squadron 2.
Squadron 2 manages a sea area of nearly 2,800 square kilometers, with a rather complicated security and order situation, especially the current situation of smuggling, trade fraud, illegal mineral exploitation... As a captain, patrolling, coordinating patrols, and controlling the sea area under management is not only a duty but also an order from the Fatherland.
During the patrol, Trung and his unit arrested and handled six cases involving 11 vehicles illegally mining and transporting sand in the area, confiscated evidence, imposed a total fine of nearly 530 million VND, and forced the return of an amount equal to the value of the two violating vehicles of more than 7.5 billion VND.
Another time, also during the patrol, he and his teammates arrested and handled a ship illegally transporting 121m3 of DO oil, imposing a fine of more than 2 billion VND. Those two cases were commended by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, and he personally received a certificate of merit. Trung once contributed to the search and rescue of a sunken boat in the Can Gio sea area, found a victim's body and salvaged a fishing boat of the people.
Lieutenant Trung also participated in the campaign "Let's clean the sea", participated in the sea semester training "I am a border guard soldier" and the program "Helping you go to school - adopted children of the border guard station". The Secretary of the Youth Union of Squadron 2 is also very passionate about volunteering for social security in the locality.
Last year, he advised and directly mobilized the unit to donate more than 1,100 gifts, 60 scholarships, 300 national flags, the "Green House" project and 2,500 white notebooks, and plant new trees... The estimated value of these activities is more than 800 million VND. "I think I became a border guard soldier by chance, with some luck, but every day I am more proud, more in love and more attached" - Lieutenant Trung shared.
For the peace of the border and islands
Commending 35 "Young, talented, and exemplary green-uniformed soldiers" of 2024 of Ho Chi Minh City, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union Ngo Minh Hai said that the soldiers have been continuing the glorious tradition of the border guard force of the city named after Uncle Ho.
At work, each person is always proactive and pioneering in carrying out tasks, brave and resourceful in combat, creative and diligent in labor and study, actively participating in mass and social activities at the military base, contributing to firmly protecting the sovereignty of borders and islands.
"You have actively fought against crime and ensured security and order in the coastal border areas and port gates in the city. This is a typical image of border guards constantly studying, training, and dedicating themselves to the peace of the border, sea and islands, and the stable development of the city," Mr. Hai emphasized.
