Rice prices in the Mekong Delta have been fluctuating constantly, sometimes increasing, sometimes decreasing, causing farmers to worry. Exporters say that this is due to the lack of signed export contracts, the amount of rice in stock, and lack of capital. Therefore, the price of winter-spring rice has dropped sharply.

Rice prices fluctuate constantly.

On February 21, Tuoi Tre Online reported that in the Mekong Delta, there was early winter-spring rice in Can Tho, Dong Thap, An Giang... but rice prices decreased sharply compared to the same period.

Although there are still nearly 10 days until the rice harvest, Mr. Dinh Thua Tu (residing in Vinh Khanh commune, Thoai Son district, An Giang province) is restless because the price of rice fluctuates continuously.

According to Mr. Tu, this winter-spring crop he planted 5 hectares of OM380 rice.

Brokers came to his house to offer his rice at 5,300 VND/kg. Traders bought Dai Thom 8 rice at 6,400-6,500 VND/kg. Compared to the same period in 2024, this price is nearly 2,000 VND/kg lower.

In general, rice prices this year are lower than last year and farmers are unlikely to make much profit.

"Traders told me that when the harvest is ready, they will announce the final price 2 days in advance. I think that with this situation, it is difficult to expect rice prices to increase again. Although the harvest has not yet started, rice prices have decreased significantly. Therefore, when the harvest is in full swing, rice prices may be the same or decrease even more," Mr. Tu acknowledged.

The leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tri Ton district, An Giang province, said that up to this point, farmers in Tri Ton district have harvested over 5,000 hectares, reaching over 15% of the winter-spring rice area.

The price of regular rice is 5,400 VND/kg, fragrant rice is about 6,400 VND/kg. Compared to the same period last year, the price of rice is decreasing sharply.

"Recently, I asked a rice exporting company, they said that at this price, exporting would not make a profit, so they bought to store in warehouses. They only buy from areas that have connections because they have not signed export contracts with foreign countries," he said.

Business inventory, lack of capital

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , a rice purchasing enterprise for milling in Can Tho City said that the current price of regular rice fluctuates from 5,300-5,500 VND/kg, while Japanese rice fluctuates from 7,600-7,700 VND/kg. The unit mainly processes Japanese rice to supply a factory in Hanoi for export.

"I sell Japanese rice to businesses in Hanoi for more than 15,000 VND/kg, this price is higher than before Tet. Because before Tet, everyone needed money so they needed to sell, but now the market has returned to normal.

Currently, rice exporting enterprises do not have money to buy rice, but the harvest has begun, so the price has dropped sharply. In addition, enterprises lack capital, so they have not increased rice purchases," added this enterprise specializing in purchasing Japanese rice.

The leader of Dai Duong Xanh Enterprise in Kien Giang province informed that the price of fragrant rice he bought in Co Do district, Can Tho city was 6,300 VND/kg. Compared to the same period last year, it has decreased sharply. Since after Tet until now, the price of rice has been fluctuating continuously.

Rice prices have also dropped sharply, to only 11,000 VND/kg of rice, down more than 500 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. Compared to before Tet, rice prices have dropped more than 2,000 VND/kg.

"The main reason is that not many businesses have signed rice export contracts. In addition, the Mekong Delta is in the winter-spring rice harvest season and there are no buyers, so rice prices have to drop sharply.

Currently, businesses are stuck with inventory. Without large rice contracts, rice prices have no way to rise.

Now, the price of rice going up or down depends on traditional markets. Whether businesses can sign contracts with them or not will determine the price of rice in the coming time," affirmed the leader of a rice exporting enterprise in Kien Giang.

Speaking more about the current rice price, a leader of Tan Long Group affirmed: "Because rice exporting enterprises have not signed contracts with foreign partners.

Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta is entering the winter-spring rice harvest season, so many people predict that rice prices will decrease. In particular, India has reopened its export market, and Indonesia has not announced any plans to buy rice again, so people believe that rice prices may decrease significantly. And it is not impossible that the Philippines will see this and "suppress" rice prices with Vietnamese businesses.
