In this year's tournament, Nguyen Thuy Linh competed with the mindset that in addition to being the defending champion, she was also the number 1 seed, the highest ranked female tennis player in the tournament (ranked 26th in the world). Her recent poor form and the high expectations of her fans put some pressure on the Dong Nai tennis player. That was also the reason why she had a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wu Luo Yu (China) in the round of 16 and Asuka Takahashi (Japan) in the quarterfinals. The number 1 tennis player in Vietnam said that these two matches were even more difficult for her than the semi-final and final matches that took place yesterday, September 15.
Nguyen Thuy Linh won the women's singles championship of the Vietnam Open Badminton Tournament for the third consecutive time.
In the final, Nguyen Thuy Linh thought she had won with a big score difference against 21-year-old Japanese player Kaoru Sugiyama (ranked 48th in the world). However, Kaoru Sugiyama had an explosive performance in the second set, from being 8 points behind Linh, she equalized and then took the lead. At the decisive moment, Linh brought into play the courage and experience of the 26th ranked player when she turned the situation around and won the final victory. In previous matches, whenever she was pushed into a difficult situation, Linh made reasonable and effective adjustments. Linh's stable competitive mentality was forged through many international tournaments at different levels. Especially in the past 2 years, she has had the chance to compete with most of the world's top players, thereby learning a lot and showing good progress.
"I am very happy and grateful that my badminton journey has the companionship and love of many fans. I know that behind me there is a lot of love like that, so I am not alone when conquering world badminton. I am also very happy to keep the championship trophy of the Vietnam Open Badminton Championship at home. This is the third consecutive time I have had this joy of being crowned," Linh confided. The women's singles championship title of the 2024 Vietnam Open Badminton Championship brought Linh 7,500 USD (about 190 million VND) in prize money from the Organizing Committee and 5,500 bonus points on the Badminton World Federation's rankings.
With the goal of improving her ranking and further improving her skills, at 11pm yesterday, Nguyen Thuy Linh continued her journey to China to participate in the China Open Badminton Tournament (from September 17 to 22). This tournament is part of the BWF Tour Super 1,000 system, so it attracts most of the world's top players to compete.
