Former President Trump was criminally charged with illegally retaining classified government documents after leaving office and conspiring to obstruct justice by trying to hide the documents from investigators.
The investigation is being led by special prosecutor Jack Smith of the US Department of Justice. Mr. Smith has vowed to push for a speedy trial.
However, legal experts say the complexity of handling classified evidence, the moves by Mr. Trump's legal team before the trial and the judge's time management could delay the trial, according to Reuters.
The latest decision comes after Judge Bruce Reinhart ordered Trump’s legal team on June 19 not to release evidence in classified documents to the media or the public. The judge also placed strict conditions on Trump’s access to those documents.
Last week, Mr. Trump appeared in federal court in Miami, Florida to hear the indictment, where he declared his innocence.
In a June 19 interview with Fox News, Mr. Trump defended his decision to take the documents when he left the White House, saying he was very busy at the time. Despite the legal turmoil, polls show Mr. Trump still maintains a significant lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
