Currently, farmers are focusing on cleaning their fields and planting the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop according to the first sowing schedule recommended by specialized agencies to minimize pest and disease damage . Mr. Nguyen Van Ninh (Khanh Hung commune, Vinh Hung district, Long An province) said: “From the beginning of the season, farmers have been informed and guided on sowing according to the recommendations of the specialized agencies to achieve good results. This season, my family is cultivating 3 hectares of rice, and we have now finished preparing and are ready to sow.”

According to Nguyen Thanh Tung, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Vinh Hung District, the plan for the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop is to sow 28,300 hectares throughout the district. The department is guiding farmers to clean their fields to reduce weeds and rice stubble, plow under straw to increase soil fertility, limit organic poisoning, and cut off the spread of pests and diseases; level the fields to reduce weeds and golden apple snails; and strictly implement concentrated sowing according to the seasonal schedule.

According to the plan, Tan Hung district will plant 37,000 hectares of rice in the 2025 summer-autumn crop season. Mr. Phan Van Ni, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Tan Hung district, said: “Given the weather conditions and the potential for pest outbreaks that could negatively impact production, the District People's Committee has directed relevant agencies and units, as well as the People's Committees of communes and towns in the district, to focus on implementing various solutions to ensure a successful 2025 summer-autumn rice crop.”

Accordingly, localities should focus on reviewing and developing rational planting plans, ensuring a sufficient isolation period from the winter-spring crop . They should regularly update information on weather, hydrometeorology, water sources, and insect pests, especially brown planthoppers and stem borers, to arrange planting times that suit the conditions of each locality.”

Thousands of hectares of rice were sown outside of the recommended schedule.

In many areas planted with the 2025 Summer-Autumn rice crop, farmers did not follow the schedule recommended by specialized agencies.

Although the Department of Agriculture, from the provincial to the district and town levels, advised farmers to plant the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop according to the seasonal schedule to limit pest and disease damage, farmers in the Đồng Tháp Mười districts of the province, such as Tân Hưng and Vĩnh Hưng, are still planting the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop on thousands of hectares without following the recommendations.

In Vinh Hung district, over 8,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice have been sown ahead of the first planting schedule, concentrated mainly in low-lying communes such as Tuyen Binh, Tuyen Binh Tay, Vinh Thuan, Vinh Tri, and Vinh Binh. Mr. Tran Van Vinh (Vinh Tri commune, Vinh Hung district) said: “The entire area is being plowed by farmers to prepare for the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop. Although we know it's not yet the planting schedule, everyone is doing it, and we can't not follow suit.”

In Tan Hung district, after harvesting the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop, farmers continued to plant the Summer-Autumn rice crop without following the recommendations of specialized agencies. Currently, there are more than 3,600 hectares of Summer-Autumn rice in the district, concentrated mainly in the lowland communes of the district such as Vinh Loi, Vinh Chau B, Vinh Thanh, Thanh Hung, Hung Thanh, etc.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Hung District, Tran Van Cuong, to ensure a successful summer-autumn rice crop in 2025, to limit the spread of pests and diseases, and mitigate the impact of drought and heat, the District People's Committee has directed members of the District Steering Committee for Production Protection, the People's Committees of communes and towns, and relevant units to focus on reviewing and developing a rational summer-autumn rice planting plan; and to encourage farmers, after harvesting the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop, not to immediately sow the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop but to plow, prepare the land, and clean the fields to eliminate pathogens and sow according to the recommended planting schedule.

In addition, the district recommends that farmers use the following rice varieties: fragrant and glutinous rice varieties: ST24, ST25, RVT, IR4625; high-yield, high-quality, and mildly fragrant rice varieties: OM4900, OM7347, OM18, Dai Thom 8, Nang Hoa 9; and rice varieties with good drought and salinity tolerance: OM5451, OM4900, etc. The district promotes the linkage of agricultural production and consumption according to the High-Tech Application Project associated with the restructuring of the agricultural sector in the area; and recommends the development of high-quality, organic production models to enhance production value.

Spontaneous sowing, not following the seasonal schedule, easily leads to outbreaks of pests and diseases that harm rice plants, directly affecting yield. Besides raising awareness, farmers need to improve their understanding, proactively prevent risks in production, apply scientific and technical advancements to their fields, and actively monitor and care for their rice plants to promptly detect and treat pests and diseases, ensuring a successful harvest.
