Identifying environmental protection as one of the cross-cutting tasks for sustainable development, over the past time, Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) has proactively implemented many drastic solutions, invested in environmental protection works and projects, and together with local authorities at all levels of Quang Ninh province, made efforts to minimize the impacts of the production process on the environment.

Fully aware of the responsibility and role of environmental protection, in recent years, the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group has spent about 1,000 billion VND each year on environmental protection. The focus is on greening mine waste dumps, investing in coal conveyor systems to replace transportation by cars; effectively operating mine wastewater treatment plants and hazardous waste treatment plants. To date, the total area of trees planted to restore the environment in Quang Ninh is more than 1,500 hectares. It is expected that by 2025, the Group will green an additional 1,000 hectares, contributing to Quang Ninh province in accelerating the transformation of the economic model from "brown" to "green".
Today, along Highway 18A, the high, bare, brown dumping grounds of coal ash as before have been replaced by the cool green of tree-lined hills. The coal dusty automobile transport routes of the past have also been replaced by closed conveyor belts, making an important contribution to environmental protection and improving the quality of people's lives.
Particularly aiming at developing a circular economy, TKV has deployed the exploitation and recovery of mine waste rock and soil to serve the filling of works and projects in the province. Combining the use of mine waste rock and soil with increasing greening of areas where dumping and mining have stopped.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Xoe, Cam Trung Ward (Cam Pha City) said: As a person who has lived in Cam Pha City for decades, I clearly feel the change in the environment of a coal industry locality like Cam Pha. In the past, many people were afraid to wear white shirts when going out because they quickly got dirty. But today, the waste dumps are covered with green, the urban environment is clean, helping our people improve their quality of life.
During the mining process, the Group continues to invest in innovation in production technology towards mechanization, automation, computerization and synchronization of large-capacity equipment in underground mining, contributing to reducing the rate of resource loss. The environmental protection efforts of the coal industry have contributed to the local authorities at all levels of Quang Ninh province in minimizing the negative impacts of coal production on the environment, contributing to the goal of transforming the growth model from "brown" to "green" in Quang Ninh province.

Mr. Doan Duy Vinh, Head of the Department of Environmental Protection (Department of Natural Resources and Environment) commented: In recent years, the coal industry has effectively implemented environmental protection solutions in the area, clearly demonstrating its role and responsibility towards the goal of rapid and sustainable development of Quang Ninh province. The efforts of the coal industry in environmental protection have contributed to Quang Ninh topping the PGI Provincial Green Index in 2023 with 26 points.
However, in the face of the current challenges of climate change, specifically the severe impacts of storm No. 3 that caused thousands of hectares of trees at mine waste dumps to collapse, the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group is continuing to direct its units to proactively research and deploy more appropriate solutions in production and environmental protection, focusing on closely following and effectively implementing Resolution 10 of the Provincial Party Committee on "Strengthening the Party's leadership in resource management, environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change response, and ensuring water security for the period 2022-2030".
Mr. Ngo Duy Tu, Deputy Director of TKV Environment Company Limited, said: To ensure the goal of sustainable environmental protection, in line with the current challenges of climate change, we have been proposing and advising TKV leaders on solutions to invest in environmental protection projects and appropriate tree conversion in the coming period.
The results achieved in environmental protection in recent times will be the premise for Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group to have sustainable development in the coming time, bringing the coal mining industry towards a green economy as the strategy that TKV has set out.
