According to the announcement of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA), a very small asteroid entered the Earth's atmosphere, but did not cause a significant impact.
According to ESA, the asteroid, named 2024 RW1, was discovered by technology researcher Jacqueline Fazekas and the Catalina Observatory in Arizona (USA) on the night of September 4 (Vietnam time).
NASA said the asteroid, which was about 1 meter in diameter, entered Earth's atmosphere and created a fireball off the east coast of the Philippines. The ESA said the asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere near the Philippine island of Luzon. Videos posted on social media showed a green fireball streaking across the sky over the Philippines.
Protecting Earth, including finding near-Earth asteroids like 2024 RW1 and cataloging them for tracking, is a top priority for space agencies around the world. In 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos to change its trajectory.
NASA is currently planning to develop a new infrared telescope called NEO Surveyor to hunt for asteroids, while China is preparing for a mission to deflect an asteroid in 2030.
