(PLVN) - Although the peak of the hot season has passed, there is still a risk of having to adjust the load during peak hours from now until the end of the year. Therefore, the need to use energy efficiently and economically is always a concern, even during the "low" hot season.
National power system capacity reserve remains low
According to the report of the Ministry of Industry and Trade sent to the National Assembly Standing Committee before the question-and-answer session on August 21, the electricity supply situation of the entire system in the first 7 months of 2024 has been well implemented, ensuring sufficient electricity demand for production and daily life of the people nationwide. In the first 7 months of 2024 (up to July 25, 2024), the total electricity produced and imported in the entire national power system is estimated to reach more than 174 billion kWh, 11.70% higher than the same period in 2023, reaching 56.06% of the plan.
According to the report of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the electricity supply for the remaining months of 2024 is basically guaranteed for the remaining time of 2024, ensuring the production and daily needs of the people.
“However, electricity growth is forecast to continue to increase until the end of 2024, the national power system capacity reserve is forecast to remain low until the end of October, in case of high load combined with unfavorable factors of the power system, there is still a potential risk of having to adjust the load during peak hours” - a representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade noted.
Notably, the representative of this Ministry also said that the electricity demand in the period up to 2030 is forecasted to be around 107 million tons of oil equivalent (TOE) and 165 - 184 million TOE in 2050. This final energy demand has taken into account the impact of energy saving programs and activities in economic sectors.
Thus, with the note that there is still a high possibility that by the end of the year there will still be a risk of having to adjust the load during peak hours, along with the fact that electricity demand forecasts already include energy saving activities in economic sectors, it shows that even in the hot "low" season, saving and using energy efficiently is still a top priority.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dung - Head of EVN Business Department informed that in 2023 and especially in the first 7 months of 2024, Vietnam's economic growth rate is very high, especially the growth in electricity is about 14%. This is a very high growth rate and currently the proportion of manufacturing industries in the structure of commodities and output accounts for 51%. This shows that using energy economically in the manufacturing sector has a great impact on the issue of using electricity economically and ensuring sufficient electricity supply for the economy and society.
Save energy to increase business competitiveness
According to statistics from international organizations, Vietnam can save about 20 - 30% of energy used in industrial production. However, statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Trade show that the potential savings can be up to 30 - 35%.
“Building awareness in the issue of using electricity economically and efficiently is the most important issue. Therefore, EVN has regularly provided information on energy use for businesses, so that businesses can understand the level of electricity use, thereby providing methods to use energy most economically and efficiently,” said Mr. Dung.
In particular, the load shifting programs are quite effective and have been widely deployed by EVN to businesses, especially key energy-using businesses. Thanks to the load shifting program, the power system does not have to bear too much pressure during peak hours and thanks to the load shifting, customers can reduce the cost of purchasing electricity during peak hours, affecting the reduction of production costs and increasing the competitiveness of businesses.
Mr. Mach Dinh Khoa - Director of Business Strategy Development and Commercial Activities (Schneider Electric Vietnam Co., Ltd.) affirmed: “Energy saving has a huge impact on businesses. Currently, in some industries, electricity costs account for 15 - 20% of the total production cost of each product. Currently, with the increasingly fierce market competition, optimizing production costs, while being able to reduce product prices or maintain product prices is very important”.
Along with that, currently, major markets such as the US, Europe, and Japan are focusing on statistics and the use of carbon emissions. Therefore, when products demonstrate production in the direction of energy saving, thereby reducing carbon emissions well. These are important premises and standards to help Vietnamese goods have a stronger position when competing in export markets, especially in demanding markets with many standards on sustainable development.
Mr. Dang Hai Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Saving and Sustainable Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that the state management agency will issue regulations to manage the issue of energy consumption, how to minimize energy consumption per unit of product. That is also a requirement, forcing businesses to change in the direction of adapting to market requirements. This also makes businesses more proactive in production and business.
