The "shocking moment" was brought up by Meta CEO (parent company of Facebook and Instagram) Zuckerberg at a hearing in the US Senate on the harmful effects of social networks on children on January 31 (local time).
The New York Post described the hearing as starting with a video that showed children being bullied on social media, children with low self-esteem, as well as stories of young people committing suicide after being blackmailed for sharing sensitive photos online.
"Your products are killing people. Now, do you want to apologize to the victims who were hurt by your products?" Republican Senator Josh Hawley asked.

Billionaire Zuckerberg then stood up and turned back to the families with affected children who were holding banners and pictures of their children.
"I apologize for everything you have been through. No one deserves the pain you have endured and we are heartbroken for that. We will continue to work hard to ensure that no one else has to endure such things," Meta's boss stressed.
Those present at the hearing did not seem to buy it. Senator Ed Markey was blunt in saying that the apology was not enough. "We need action. We need laws. We need protections. We are sick of apologies," he argued.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez also asked the Facebook and Instagram chief to start acting as a parent.
"He himself has children, so he needs to take the same measures to protect his children. When building the foundation, he needs to think about how it affects his children, thereby knowing the sadness and heartache that parents are suffering," Mr. Torrez emphasized.
Billionaire Zuckerberg's appearance before the US Senate Judiciary Committee comes amid an estimated 100,000 minors being sexually harassed every day while using social networks Facebook and Instagram.
The "shocking" figure was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, citing internal documents from Meta. The report shows that children using Facebook or Instagram are not only harassed by "indecent" comments but also receive "sensitive" images from other users.
