German badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh took less than half an hour to defeat Kaloyana Nalbantova (Bulgaria) 21-7, 21-11 in the first round of the 2024 German Open badminton tournament.
Thuy Linh is currently the number one female tennis player in Vietnam.
On the morning of February 29, Thuy Linh, ranked 23rd in the world, started her career at the German Open, where she was seeded seventh in the women's singles.
This is a tournament in the World Tour Super 300 system of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Nguyen Thuy Linh's initial opponent was Neslihan Arin. However, due to the withdrawal of the Turkish player, the Organizing Committee brought in 18-year-old talent Nalbantova to replace her.
Against an opponent ranked 57 places below her, Thuy Linh did not encounter many difficulties. After falling behind 0-2, she quickly regained control of the game with smart and varied attacks, forcing her opponent to move continuously to win quickly 21-7 in the first set.
The script in the second set did not change much. Nalbantova tried to move quickly to save Thuy Linh's shots. But the gap in skill and experience prevented the Bulgarian player from making a surprise and she lost 11-21.
This is Thuy Linh's first win in 2024 after two consecutive defeats at the India Open and Indonesia Masters in January. Her next opponent is 21-year-old Lauren Lam, ranked 53rd in the world. The American also quickly defeated Lianne Tan (Belgium) in the qualifying round with the scores of 21-13, 21-15. Lauren Lam had lost to Thuy Linh at the 2022 Belgian International Badminton Tournament.
After the German tournament, Thuy Linh will participate in tournaments in France, England, Switzerland and Spain to accumulate points, improve her world ranking and find an Olympic seed.
