Northern Hydropower Plant is generating maximum power

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/06/2024

On June 19, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that the electricity supply situation last week continued to ensure consumer demand. In particular, hydroelectric reservoirs in the North, after a long period of having to save water to the maximum, are now being mobilized to the maximum by the National Power System Control Center.

Many hydroelectric reservoirs in the North are being mobilized to generate maximum electricity.

According to the Electricity Regulatory Authority, during the week from June 10 to 16, water levels in hydroelectric reservoirs in the North such as Ban Chat, Thac Ba, Tuyen Quang, Trung Son, and Bac Ha were 109 - 230% higher than the average of many years.

Water output, including small hydropower, continued to reach the highest value of 585.7 million kWh (June 10), mainly concentrated in the North with over 532 million kWh.

Last week, the National Power System Control Center increased the exploitation of Son La, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang, and Ban Chat hydropower reservoirs to gradually bring the water levels of the reservoirs back to pre-flood levels, applied during flood periods according to the regulations in the Inter-reservoir Operation Procedures in the Red River Basin.

Of which, on June 11, Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir had to open 1-2 bottom spillway gates. On June 15, from 13:00, Son La reservoir had to open 1 bottom spillway gate and closed it at 18:00 on the same day.

Statistics as of June 16 show that hydroelectric reservoirs in the entire system are storing more than 7.9 billion kWh of water, 2.9 billion kWh higher than the plan for the whole year of 2024.

According to the Electricity Regulatory Authority, from June 17 to now, the North has experienced a continuous heat wave above 37 degrees Celsius, including days of 38 degrees Celsius; the Red River Delta and Hoa Binh have experienced heat and severe heat, with some areas experiencing particularly severe heat. It is forecasted that from around June 22, the North will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, while daytime heat will gradually decrease.

Accordingly, hydropower plants across the country continue to operate according to the actual hydrological situation and optimal regulation orientation in the June operation plan, meeting grid constraints, system demands, water levels and downstream water supply requirements according to the inter-reservoir process.

In the North, hydroelectric reservoirs are flexibly mobilized according to the actual hydrological situation, while still ensuring available capacity to meet peak hot weather.

In particular, Tuyen Quang, Son La, Hoa Binh and Ban Chat hydroelectric plants will be mobilized to the maximum due to good water flow and increased flood prevention capacity.

However, to ensure electricity supply during the peak dry season that lasts until the end of July, the Electricity Regulatory Authority continues to require power corporations to accurately forecast peak load capacity, clearly announce their ability to implement load adjustment programs; closely coordinate with the National Power System Control Center during hot days with the risk of peak capacity shortage, and have an operational plan to ensure electricity supply in extreme cases.

For thermal power plants, factories proactively report and provide feasible and accurate information on the operation of generators, causes of incidents, repair time, coal inventory, expected progress and coal import plan to the National Power System Control Center, absolutely not allowing the situation where the plant is ready to generate electricity but lacks coal fuel and cannot generate enough capacity.
