NATO countries have taken turns mentioning the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine as the US and Russia prepare to negotiate to end the conflict.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on February 16 that he is ready and willing to send British troops to Ukraine to maintain peace if the parties reach an agreement to end the fighting.
On February 17, Swedish Radio quoted Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard as saying that the Nordic country also did not rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine to maintain peace after the war.

"Now, we must first negotiate a just and lasting peace that respects international law, respects Ukraine and first of all ensures that Russia cannot retreat to build new power and attack Ukraine or any other country for several years. Once we have that peace, we need to ensure that it is sustained and the government does not rule out anything," Ms. Stenergard said.
The British leader and Swedish diplomat spoke as European leaders prepared to hold an emergency meeting in Paris on February 17 to discuss the next steps for Ukraine. The meeting was called by French President Emmanuel Macron after Europe was not invited to the first phase of the Ukraine peace talks between the US and Russia, and Washington officials signaled a reduction in security support for Europe.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian representatives are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia on February 17 to begin negotiations. According to AFP, Mr. Rubio has just arrived in the Gulf country after concluding a visit to Israel.
On the other hand, Ukraine was not invited to the dialogue between the US and Russia this time, although Mr. Rubio said Kyiv and Europe would eventually participate in real negotiations to end the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on February 16 that he would never accept any decision between the US and Russia on the results of peace talks without Ukraine.
