It has been exactly three years since the German national team lost 0-2 to England in the round of 16 of the last Euro, shattering coach Joachim Löw's dream of winning the title. But now history can be rewritten. In recent days, German fans have a new song: "Berlin, Berlin, we're going to Berlin". German fans sing this every time they gather in the fan zones.
However, the summer in Germany has not been very kind to the home fans. The sun was blazing hot but was immediately followed by torrential rains, thunder and lightning, and tornadoes. The rain, including hail, forced the police to close several fan zones in Dortmund as well as fan areas in Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Gelsenkirchen, leaving many fans disappointed.
A fanzone for football fans in Berlin
In Dortmund, up to 80,000 Turkish fans were expected to gather in the fan zones at Friedensplatz and Westfalenpark to watch their national team play Georgia. But due to the weather warning, the city government issued a notice to suspend outdoor activities. Fans without tickets to the match were asked to watch at home.
Martin Sauer, Dortmund's representative at the Euros, said: "Dortmund had prepared a football party for Turkish and Georgian fans. Unfortunately, this event could not take place, because the safety of fans in the city is our top priority."
