Speaking for the first time at the Intel Vision 2025 conference on March 31, Intel's new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, pledged a major "cultural shift" at the corporation, emphasizing the priority of attracting talent, building relationships with customers and cutting bureaucracy.
Intel’s new CEO will have to find a way to turn around a company that once held 90% of the semiconductor market but is now lagging behind rivals like Nvidia. Mr. Tan will cut the bloated organization and create a leaner version, where he will work directly with engineers to develop new products based on customer feedback.
Tan said his top priority is to “attract the best talent in the industry to come back or join Intel,” allowing Intel to operate like a “startup from day one.” Since announcing cost-cutting measures in August 2024, Intel has cut about 15,000 jobs in an effort to turn around its business.
Building Intel back up requires maintaining relationships and relying on “two or three very important customers,” he said. Tan also said the Trump administration is ready to support Intel as the federal government seeks to maintain America’s leadership in the semiconductor industry.
Tan did not disclose the identities of the customers, but Nvidia and Apple have not yet committed to working with Intel as a manufacturing partner.
Mr. Tan also pledged to cut bureaucracy and give Intel engineers more power to innovate from within. At the same time, he stressed that in recent years at the company, new ideas have not had “space to grow.”
“My weekends are usually full with engineers and architects. They have great ideas, they want to change the world, and that's why I'm excited to work closely with them,” he shared.
Lip-Bu Tan, a Malaysian investor and businessman, was previously a member of Intel’s board of directors and was elected CEO on March 18. With his extensive experience and knowledge, his appointment has led to a significant increase in Intel’s stock price, reflecting the market’s confidence in the new CEO’s leadership.
Lip-Bu Tan’s vision is clear and understandable. However, to make it a reality, he will face many challenges, including fierce competition from rivals such as Nvidia and TSMC, as well as ensuring that Intel’s restructuring plans achieve concrete results in the coming time.
