The import-export turnover of nearly 800 billion USD in 2024 is a record high, partly the result of efforts to diversify the market.
From traditional markets…
The import-export achievements of 2024 will probably be mentioned many times in the coming years, not only because it has gradually approached the record number ever - nearly 800 billion USD, but also because of the great efforts of the Party, Government, Ministry of Industry and Trade, ministries, branches, associations and enterprises in diversifying markets, bringing Vietnamese goods to all over the world.
In 2024, the import-export turnover of goods reached 786.29 billion USD, an increase of 15.4% over the previous year. Notably, in addition to traditional markets, businesses are now diversifying their export markets to many new markets such as: Africa, Northern Europe, West Asia...
This result was not achieved easily but thanks to efforts to diversify the market through trade promotion activities. Notably, the 2024 Fruit Festival held in Beijing.

The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade - Minister Nguyen Hong Dien has repeatedly worried about the fact that Vietnam has an extremely favorable position when it is next to a giant market with 1.4 billion people, but the export turnover to this market is still very modest. The form of export is still heavily dependent on small-scale export. For that reason, the Vietnam Fruit Festival was held for the first time from September 29-30, 2024, with the participation of many large agricultural enterprises in Vietnam and specialized agricultural associations, Chinese importers, which is considered an extremely timely solution to boost the export of fruits - a product that is especially popular among Chinese people to this market.
With the theme “Vietnamese Fruits – Four Seasons of Deliciousness”, the Festival is one of the important trade promotion events in the Chinese market for fresh fruits and vegetables and processed products from fruits and vegetables that have been officially imported into China. The event was held on the occasion of the first time fresh coconuts were licensed to enter this market.

Speaking at the Festival, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien stated that, currently, Vietnamese fruits are still mainly exported to China through border trade to meet the market demand of some localities in the South, Southeast of China and provinces adjacent to Vietnam. For other localities, the appearance of Vietnamese fruit products is still quite modest, while the demand for fruit consumption in the Chinese market is very large and the ability to supply high-quality, specialty fruits of Vietnam is very abundant...
This is a good opportunity for Vietnamese producers and suppliers to introduce and promote their brands and images of typical fruit products, as well as to meet and seek customers, enhance trade activities, and build sustainable cooperative relationships with potential partners in fruit import in China. At the same time, it is a favorable opportunity for a large number of Chinese consumers to directly experience the quality and unique, distinctive flavors of Vietnamese fruits.
In addition to trade promotion events with China, last year, many trade promotion activities by industry, by locality, and trade promotion at border gates with China were organized. Thanks to that, according to the General Department of Customs, the import-export turnover between Vietnam and China reached 205.2 billion USD. China is also the first trade partner with which our country has established a turnover scale of 200 billion USD or more. China is also the largest market for many agricultural products, especially Vietnamese durian.
Together with China, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also organizes many major trade promotion events such as the Conference of Trade Counselors and Heads of Trade Offices in Europe in July 2024; Conference of Trade Counselors and Heads of Trade Offices in Asia - Africa in December 2024; Vietnam - Sweden Business Forum; International Shopping and Consumption Festival (world bazaar festival) in December 2024 in Manila, Philippines... Thanks to that, export turnover to Vietnam's traditional markets is still maintained relatively steadily.
To new markets…
Not only traditional markets, trade promotion activities are also deployed to many distant and new markets. For example, within the framework of Vietnam Day from December 13-15, 2024 in the capital Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Vietnam Trade Office in Saudi Arabia organized an exhibition of products of over 100 businesses looking for opportunities to expand their markets to the Middle East.
Or, on November 22, 2024, at Sylicon Oasis, Dubai, the opening ceremony of "Vietnamese Goods Week at Lulu Supermarket" took place. This is the first event held in Dubai with the coordination between the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and Lulu Group.

Notably, the event was held right after Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's official visit to the UAE, right after the Vietnam - UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) - an event that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assessed as one of two historical milestones in the relationship between the two countries was signed, promising to contribute to promoting the growth of import and export turnover between Vietnam and the UAE.
The effectiveness of trade promotion activities contributing to the export results of goods in recent times is a strong proof that trade promotion is truly a bridge leading Vietnamese products to penetrate international markets. From near markets to far markets, from traditional markets to new markets, with the goal of diversification, not "putting all eggs in one basket", national trade promotion programs have helped businesses have the opportunity to learn about the market, consumer tastes; meet and connect with partners as well as take advantage of FTAs; promote and introduce products to foreign importers; find stable sources of raw materials for production, helping businesses participate deeply in global value chains. Import and export activities have been helping Vietnamese goods continue to identify their value and brand in the global market, extending good results in the coming time.
Mr. Vu Ba Phu - Director of the Trade Promotion Department - Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in 2025, the Industry and Trade sector will focus on promoting trade for green economic products, environmentally friendly, contributing to promoting green transformation, supporting businesses to improve their competitiveness in the new context, and deeply participating in the global value chain. At the same time, promoting the application of information technology and digital transformation in trade promotion. |
