Get closer to your audience during prime time

Recently, Vietnam Television (VTV)'s decision to dedicate prime time to broadcast Vietnamese films has received the attention of a large audience. Specifically, from Monday to Friday every week at 8:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on VTV3 and from 9:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on VTV1, Vietnamese-produced television dramas will be broadcast. The first two films selected to launch the new broadcast schedule are "My Father, the One Who Stays" (VTV1) by director, Meritorious Artist Vu Truong Khoa and "Dusty Roads" (VTV3) by director Trinh Le Phong. This information really makes domestic cinema-loving audiences look forward to it. A representative of Vietnam Television said that VTV has conducted research and rearranged the broadcast schedule to best meet the needs of the audience, while creating a habit of watching movies for the audience at a fixed time.

Observing recent years, it can be seen that Vietnamese television dramas have made significant progress in regaining the love of the audience. There are more and more films that are highly appreciated for their quality, winning the hearts of viewers, recently we can mention: Doc dao, Khong thoi gian, Di giu troi ruc roc, Chung ta cua 8 nam sau, Gap em ngay nang, Tram cuu trai tim, Ve nha di con...

Survey results show that Vietnamese primetime dramas are increasingly attracting a large number of viewers. Many dramas have become phenomena with high viewership ratings. On social networking forums, Vietnamese dramas with impressive casts quickly become “hot” topics, receiving heated discussions from the community. Many viewers eagerly wait for the familiar time slot to enjoy their favorite dramas.

Director, People's Artist Trong Trinh assessed: In 2024, television dramas will develop strongly in all aspects, especially topics that are developed with many colors such as family psychology, society, crime films, films about armed forces. At the same time, he highly appreciated the remarkable development of television dramas in terms of acting, filming, with the participation of units of the army and police. From the observation of people in the profession, he realized that there are young directors who, although not very experienced, have a new, modern way of posing problems and telling stories, approaching new things. Thanks to that, the films are increasingly attracting audiences.

Constantly innovating

The above positive signals partly show that Vietnamese cinema in general, and Vietnamese television dramas in particular, have gradually established a solid position in the hearts of the audience. If in the previous period, there were opinions expressing concerns about the ratio of foreign television dramas that were somewhat overwhelming domestic films, and the quality was also much superior, then up to now, this situation has changed positively. The quantity and quality of domestically produced films are constantly improving, attracting the attention and following of a large audience. This can be considered a great source of encouragement and motivation for filmmakers. At the same time, more importantly, the attention and support of the public will create positive impacts contributing to the development of Vietnam's cultural industry, especially in the current period.

The rise of Vietnamese television dramas in recent times is not only a purely individual development of the entertainment industry, but also has a significant impact on culture and society, contributing to orienting public awareness, actively promoting the image of the country and Vietnamese people to international friends. Because through each film, the lives and traditional customs, stories of culture and history of ethnic groups on the S-shaped strip of land are vividly conveyed through stories close to life. In reality, not everyone has the conditions to enjoy commercial films shown in theaters, especially people in rural areas, mountainous areas, remote areas. Meanwhile, television dramas are broadcast on national television, so many people can easily enjoy them. This is a great advantage of television dramas in reaching the public. However, this also poses increasingly high challenges, requirements and demands for television filmmakers.

It is undeniable that although filmmakers are increasingly interested in and seriously and systematically investing in producing many good films on television, constantly looking for promising young actors to participate in acting, due to pressure on budget, production progress, and broadcasting time, there has been a situation where some episodes are hastily and carelessly staged, leading to regrettable mistakes in costumes, incorrect representation of customs and practices, monotonous and repetitive acting of actors; or inserting too many advertisements into the film content, making viewers disappointed and angry. Some audiences have had negative reactions such as calling for a boycott of Vietnamese television dramas on some social networking forums. Although it is impossible to please all audiences, filmmakers also need to be open-minded and listen to sincere and objective comments from the audience to make appropriate adjustments, helping to create films of increasingly high quality.

Currently, Vietnam Television alone produces an average of more than 500 episodes per year (equivalent to 12-15 films). Faced with the growing demand and increasingly strict requirements from the audience, filmmakers are forced to make greater efforts and breakthroughs. Accordingly, film scripts need to meet diverse tastes, bring the breath of life; continue to improve production quality at a reasonable cost to improve the setting, filming techniques, sound, and post-production. At the same time, it is necessary to synchronize the stages from pre-production to post-production to avoid patchwork. Equally important is the issue of training and selecting personnel. The team of directors, actors, and technicians need to improve their skills and expertise through formal training or international cooperation. Casting actors also needs to be more thorough to ensure they are suitable for the role.

Vietnamese television dramas are facing a great opportunity to affirm their position and role in the spiritual life of the people, but they also face a great challenge in overcoming themselves. The efforts to innovate in recent times are commendable, but to truly conquer the audience, filmmakers need to be more determined in overcoming shortcomings, meeting the expectations and trust of the audience.
