Nguyen Viet Ha - a young man in zone 19, Bac Son commune, Tam Nong district, became a shining example of entrepreneurial spirit and overcoming difficulties in agriculture after storm Yagi.
From the first difficult steps with Thai banana trees, Mr. Ha has now developed a farm raising commercial fighting cocks and wild pigs. In 2018, with his passion and desire to escape poverty, Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha decided to start a career in growing Thai bananas. As an active member of the Bac Son Commune Farmers' Association, with enthusiastic support from the association, Mr. Ha was able to access loans from the Social Policy Bank - an opportunity to start a business in the agricultural sector.
With the initial loan and available capital, Mr. Ha started building a model of growing Western Thai bananas. In the first years, banana output only brought in 200-300 million VND/year. However, thanks to his perseverance and constant learning, his banana growing model has grown strongly. By 2023, after deducting costs, labor costs and other investments, revenue from bananas reached 500 million VND/year.
Mr. Ha's banana growing model not only brings stable income to his family but also creates jobs for 2 local official workers and many seasonal workers.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha takes care of his family's purebred wild boar herd.
In particular, throughout his career, he has always maintained a spirit of learning and proactively sought new solutions to optimize production. Mr. Ha said: “Starting from scratch, despite the hardships, I refused to give up. I traveled everywhere to research banana varieties, ask for fertilizers, and personally took care of the banana garden under all harsh weather conditions.
Starting a business in agriculture is not easy, but if you persevere, learn and find the right direction, you will have a chance to succeed. Besides, accessing capital sources and support from organizations such as the Farmers' Association is also very important to help reduce the burden in the process of starting a business."
However, starting a business is a very difficult journey, requiring passion, perseverance and overcoming difficulties to the end. In August 2024, all 11 hectares of banana land equivalent to more than 30,000 trees cultivated outdoors by Mr. Ha were completely broken and collapsed after Typhoon No. 3 Yagi passed. Not giving up, after a while, Mr. Ha quickly decided to change his economic direction to a new livestock model.
In October 2024, Mr. Ha rented a 1.1-hectare farm to develop a model of raising commercial fighting cocks and wild boars. Currently, his farm has 80 wild boars and more than 300 fighting cocks, with a total barn area of up to 3,600 square meters. Despite the difficulties, Mr. Ha is still determined to maintain and develop agriculture, especially banana growing. It is expected that early next year, he will replant 2,000 banana trees on the remaining land of the farm.
“Bananas are a familiar specialty fruit of the North. Banana trees bring high economic value and can be harvested year-round. Despite the failure due to natural disasters, I still believe in the potential and benefits of this plant in agricultural production,” said Mr. Ha.
Mr. Ha’s entrepreneurial story is not only an individual’s journey of overcoming difficulties, but also a testament to the innovation in thinking of young farmers in developing the rural economy. Farming is not easy, with many challenges, risks and unpredictable natural disasters. However, he always maintains faith in his work and continues to learn to do better.
Nguyen Viet Ha's entrepreneurial journey is a clear testament to the spirit of overcoming difficulties.
Ms. Lam Phuong Yen, President of the Farmers' Association of Bac Son Commune, said: "Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha is a shining example of entrepreneurial spirit and rising out of poverty in the movement of farmers competing in production and good business. It is his diligence, hard work and desire to get rich that have helped him overcome difficulties and become one of the exemplary members of the Farmers' Association of the commune."
Thanks to the efforts of local authorities and people, especially examples like Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha, the poverty rate in Bac Son commune in 2024 decreased by 0.37%, reaching 185% of the plan, while the near-poor household rate decreased by 0.55%, reaching 183.3% of the plan. This success further highlights the important role of agriculture in improving people's lives.
These figures are not only the result of policies to support farmers but also a testament to the tireless efforts of farmers like Nguyen Viet Ha, who have overcome difficulties to achieve success. The movement “Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty” is being widely replicated and strongly developed in Bac Son commune and Nguyen Viet Ha is one of the shining examples in this movement.
The entrepreneurial journey of Nguyen Viet Ha is a clear demonstration of the spirit of overcoming difficulties and the constant efforts of rural youth in developing the agricultural economy. From an ordinary farmer, he has become a strong inspiration to the community, affirming that agriculture is the path to prosperity, contributing to the sustainable poverty reduction of society.
