The US Coast Guard in Boston told the BBC that a search operation had been launched. It is not yet clear how many people were on board.
Small submersibles are sometimes paid to take tourists to see the Titanic wreck. Such a trip typically costs more than £90,000. A dive to the wreck and then to the surface typically takes eight hours.
The famous shipwreck lies 3,800m below the Atlantic Ocean and about 600km off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
The Titanic struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912. Of the 2,200 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 died. The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985.
