Focus on the graduation exam

With only 3 months left until the 2025 high school graduation exam, high schools across the country are stepping up guidance for 12th graders to review, consolidate knowledge, and practice test-taking skills. This is an important stage, requiring high concentration and great effort from both teachers and students to achieve the best results.

2025 is the first year that the high school graduation exam is organized according to the 2018 General Education Program. The number of subjects and the exam structure have changed significantly towards competency assessment.

The "golden" time to review

Candidates will only take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects (Literature, Mathematics) and 2 optional subjects (in the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology). Determining that there will be changes compared to previous exams, many high schools have flexible and effective review plans.

Since the beginning of the school year, the professional department of Chieng Son Secondary and High School (Moc Chau town, Son La province) has organized career counseling, counseling on choosing graduation exam subjects, organizing review classes according to students' ability levels, regularly evaluating, reviewing, and classifying weak students for additional tutoring. Teacher Do Duy Chien, Principal of Chieng Son Secondary and High School, shared: In the 2024-2025 school year, the whole school has 178 students who will take the graduation exam. In the second semester, the school will organize 5 mock exams to assess the quality of students.

The mock exams are organized seriously, closely following the real exam process, then the professional department analyzes the results to develop a suitable review plan for the next stage. For boarding students, the school arranges a space for self-study outside of class hours; assigns subject teachers and homeroom teachers to closely monitor the learning process, ready to support when students encounter difficulties...

A notable new point in the 2025 high school graduation exam is that the Literature exam may use materials other than textbooks, to assess students' ability to read, understand and perceive texts in real-life situations, limiting the situation of rote learning and mechanical memorization.

Immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the reference questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam, teachers at Tran Quang Khai High School (Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province) not only made the most of their regular time to impart knowledge to students, but also strengthened their guidance on self-study and self-researching materials; assigned homework; coordinated with parents in checking and supervising their studies at home. The school also launched free review classes with a duration of 2 periods/week/subject for students. Teacher Nguyen Duc Hong, Principal of Tran Quang Khai High School, assessed that the synchronous and scientific review solutions with the spirit of support and creating the best conditions will help students be well prepared and confident to achieve the best results in the upcoming high school graduation exam.

Teacher Nguyen Nguyet Nga, a teacher at Viet Duc High School (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi) said that this change requires teachers and students to adjust their review methods. Students need to have a solid grasp of knowledge about genres and text types instead of memorizing text materials in textbooks; increase reading comprehension and writing practice with texts outside of textbooks to get used to the new type of questions. In class, teachers also let students practice identifying and analyzing genre, content and artistic elements of text materials outside of textbooks.

Nguyen Phuong Linh, a 12th grader at Tran Phu High School (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi) shared: At first, we were quite worried, but thanks to the clear review plan from the school and the careful guidance of teachers, I felt more secure. We also made our own study schedule combined with reasonable rest to avoid overload and keep our spirits comfortable when entering the exam.

Focus on active and scientific review

Director of the Department of Education and Training of Son La province, Associate Professor, PhD Nguyen Huy Hoang said that he has organized training for all teachers teaching grade 12 on methods and content of reviewing for the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program. Schools have proactively developed educational plans suitable to actual conditions; classified students according to their learning ability right from the beginning of the school year and through the assessment tests to organize appropriate teaching and review... With the viewpoint of "All for dear students", "No student left behind", the education and training sector of Son La province has coordinated with departments, branches, unions, and local authorities to strengthen management, support, and create the best conditions for students to study, access reference materials in school libraries, look up learning materials and learning information via the internet; assign teachers to support and guide students to study outside of regular school hours.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has just organized a quality survey with more than 200,000 11th and 12th graders, to determine the practical capacity of students, from which to have specific solutions and review methods suitable for each subject.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) Nguyen Ngoc Ha, the 2025 high school graduation exam closely follows the high school education program, mainly the content of the 12th grade program and the content that continues from grades 10, 11 to grade 12. Therefore, in addition to mastering the knowledge and skills according to the program, during the review process, students need to practice critical thinking and reasoning skills when encountering content and knowledge that requires practical application. Questions with high classification in the exam often fall into this group of requirements.
