Actor Viet Bac - who was successful with the role of Red-haired Xuan in the TV series Tro doi (directed by Nhue Giang) - also surprised everyone when he transformed into the virtuous Maudgalyayana, a supernatural disciple of Buddha.

At first, when Viet Bac was invited to play this role, he was skeptical that he was suitable for the role. To play the role of Muc Kien Lien, actor Viet Bac voluntarily shaved his head.

The film Muc Kien Lien saves his mother , produced by artist Tra My and directed by Quan Trong Phuc, with the participation of People's Artist Tien Dat, People's Artist Nguyen Hai, Meritorious Artist Chi Trung, artists Tra My, Viet Bac, Hiep Vit, Jimmii Khanh, Thu Huyen, Thuy Lien, Khac Dung. Venerable Thich Truong Xuan and Venerable Thich Giac Giao are special guests.

The 40-minute film tells the story of Venerable Maudgalyayana's journey to save his mother, Thanh De. This is a Buddhist story familiar to the Vietnamese people and has now been made into a film.

Artist Tra My said that she had played the role of Maudgalyayana saving his mother many times, so she wanted to make a film version. After completing the script, she sent it to Venerable Thich Duc Nguyen - Head of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Hoa Binh province, Venerable Thich Truong Xuan - abbot of Lien Tri pagoda (Quoc Oai, Hanoi) to ask for their opinions, hoping that each line would be the most accurate, in accordance with Buddhist language.

Playing the role of Mrs. Thanh De, artist Tra My was bruised all over her body and took 2 weeks to recover because she “wanted to be beaten and thrown around for real to feel the pain of the character”. There was no studio, the hell scene was built in a jagged cave, artist Tra My and many actors fell and got injured many times.

Meritorious Artist Chi Trung jokingly said that the film about Buddhism only invited comedians to act. “People’s Artist Tien Dat is a great comedian, People’s Artist Nguyen Hai is a former comedian, and I, Viet Bac, Thuy Lien, Thu Huyen, Jimmii Khanh… all act as comedians. On television, we are rarely invited to play political roles. I don’t understand much about Buddhism, I don’t have the peace of mind to fully embrace Buddhism, so when I was invited to this film, I realized many things,” Meritorious Artist Chi Trung shared.

Muc Kien Lien saves his mother tells the story of Thanh De (artist Tra My) who, when alive, did not believe in the Three Jewels, but slandered, destroyed, and said bad things. After she died, she was condemned to hell. After the Venerable Maudgalyayana Bodhisattva (Viet Bac) attained the Arhat fruit, obtained the six supernatural powers, and immediately observed all realms to find his mother. Out of pity for his mother, the Venerable Maudgalyayana went to hell, offered a bowl of rice to his mother, but as soon as the rice was brought to his mouth, it turned into a red-hot coal. Maudgalyayana asked the Buddha for help, and was instructed by the Buddha that in order to save his mother, on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month - the day when the Buddhas rejoiced, it was also the time when the monks of Tu Tu should hold the Vu Lan Bon ceremony - to perform the "gia dao huyen" ceremony. Feeling grateful for the Buddha's grace, the Venerable Maudgalyayana encouraged people in the world to hold the Vu Lan ceremony every year on this occasion, make offerings to the monks of the ten directions, and recite the Vu Lan Bon sutra to show filial piety to their parents and ancestors.
