Prices of iron ore with 62% iron content jumped to more than $105 a tonne in February, the highest in more than a month, on reduced supply and expectations of strong construction and manufacturing demand for the ferrous metal from major global consumers.

Storms in Australia have forced Rio Tinto to clear iron ore ships from ports, adding to congestion after the company struggled to move cargo due to rail disruptions.

Rio warned last month that its first-quarter iron ore shipments could be impacted by rail disruptions following record rainfall along Western Australia's Pilbara coast caused by Tropical Cyclone Sean.

“The port clean-up is compounding system challenges and high inventories, as repair work continues on the East Intercourse dumper, which was affected by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Sean in January,” the operator said.

The world's largest iron ore producer said it expected to produce between 323 million and 338 million tonnes of iron ore from its Pilbara operations this year, up from 328.6 million tonnes last year.

Meanwhile, expectations of a pickup in construction activity in China after the Lunar New Year celebrations were boosted by pledges of ample fiscal stimulus from Beijing, supporting an improved credit mix from the latest data.

This coincided with strong steel demand from China's major trading partners, as the country exported a record 9.7 million tonnes of steel in December, up 26% year-on-year.
