Lang Vay village is a village with a large concentration of ethnic minorities in Tan Lap commune, Huong Hoa district. Here, domestic violence (DV) still haunts many women and children (W&C). Originating from the idea of "respecting men more than women", gender stereotypes make women have less say in the family, and accept gender discrimination. Another reason is the habit of drinking, which makes many men unable to control their behavior. The material and spiritual life of the people here still faces many difficulties.
As the previous generation, not willing to see domestic violence happening in young families, disrupting social order and security in the locality, Mr. Ho Thao, Head of the Front Work Committee of Lang Vay residential area, did not hesitate to work with political and social organizations to go to each house in the village to propagate and mobilize people to comply with the Party's guidelines, the State's policies and laws, and practice a civilized lifestyle.
With his prestige and influence, experience and understanding, Mr. Thao is always present in village meetings and community communication sessions to explain and mobilize people to better understand the long-term harmful effects of domestic violence on women and children, as well as to eliminate gender stereotypes and discrimination, promote gender equality, and create a healthy and safe living environment.
“In addition to being a prestigious person in the Lang Vay village community, Mr. Ho Thao is also an active member of community intervention models. Whatever we train and communicate, he enthusiastically shares and actively explains to ethnic minorities to understand and follow. In addition to participating in the Community Communication Team, he is also a member of the Executive Board of the village's "Trusted Community Address".
Whenever there is a domestic violence incident, he and the members of the address always find ways to protect the safety of the victim, then find ways to support, persuade, and reconcile to eliminate conflicts in the family. With Mr. Thao, we have an important "support" in the work of propaganda and mobilizing the people", said the President of the Women's Union of Tan Lap Commune, Hoang Thi Thanh Nhan.
In fact, in many villages and hamlets of ethnic minorities and mountainous areas of the province, some bad customs still exist, so the problem of domestic violence and gender inequality still continues. The material and spiritual life of women and children is disadvantaged. Faced with this situation, in recent years, the Provincial Women's Union has actively implemented many solutions to promote gender equality and solve urgent problems for women and children in ethnic minorities and mountainous areas. In particular, the unions at all levels always clearly identify the role and position of prestigious people, village elders, and village chiefs, and their importance in grassroots propaganda and mobilization work.
Therefore, the association always focuses on the participation and participation of this group in propaganda activities in the community to mobilize people to eliminate prejudices, gender stereotypes, and backward customs to implement gender equality. Thanks to that, many activities and models to support ethnic minority women have been implemented and brought positive results.
Particularly for the activities of Project 8 “Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children”, up to now, the Provincial Women’s Union has organized 4 training courses on gender knowledge, gender mainstreaming for officials in the commune-level political system, village elders, village chiefs, religious dignitaries and prestigious people in the community for 220 participants. Organized a discussion to promote the role of village elders, village chiefs, prestigious people in the community, promote gender equality, gender mainstreaming with 120 participants.
In addition, the Women's Union of 5 districts organized 44 training courses to improve capacity on gender equality for 425 district officials and commune-level departments and agencies. The Provincial Women's Union organized a seminar to share initiatives and experiences on promoting good cultural practices of ethnic minorities in promoting gender equality in Quang Tri province.
In addition, in order to listen to the people's opinions, including the participation of prestigious people, village elders, and village chiefs in the locality, the Provincial Women's Union organized 22 dialogues in mountainous communes with about 2,200 participants. The District Women's Union also chaired 25 policy dialogue conferences on issues related to existing issues in the locality.
Women's Unions at all levels coordinate with village elders, village chiefs, and prestigious people to promote and exploit the advantages of ethnic minority cultural identity to create economic values and raise awareness among people and women, gradually eliminating harmful customs for women and children such as: early marriage, incestuous marriage, home birth without medical support...
Establishing new models and maintaining them to change thinking and working methods, eliminate bad customs, promote gender equality... create a healthy "playground", affirm the role of members and ethnic minority women in developing cultural life, socio-economic life in the locality and participating in protecting border security...
Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union Tran Thi Thuy Nga said: "In the coming time, the Provincial Women's Union will continue to pay attention to and take care of building a team of village elders, village chiefs, and prestigious people at the grassroots level, so that each village and hamlet will have more prestigious individuals who "understand the people, are close to the people, listen to the people and speak for the people to listen".
Strengthen the call for participation of prestigious people, village elders, and village chiefs in mobilizing and guiding members and women to preserve the good cultural values of the nation, eliminate bad customs, prejudices, and gender stereotypes in the family and community. Actively propagate the Party's guidelines, policies, and laws of the State; train prestigious people on knowledge of gender equality to maximize their role in protecting the rights of ethnic minority women and children.
