Since the beginning of March 2025, a series of irrigation works in Dak Mil district ( Dak Nong province) have run out of water. This situation has caused many difficulties and challenges for local people in farming and production. Many households in Dak Gan, Dak Lao, Duc Thanh communes... (Dak Mil district) depend entirely on the irrigation reservoir in the area. However, over the past month, the reservoir has dried up, making watering coffee, pepper and other crops extremely difficult. Most of the irrigation reservoirs in Dak Mil district are dry and cracked, signaling a serious drought season. Currently, the weather in Dak Mil district is dry season, the average temperature ranges from 18-33 degrees; air humidity is low; the flow of rivers and streams continues to decrease, many small rivers and streams have dried up, the water reserves of irrigation reservoirs are decreasing very quickly.
Ms. Le Thi Lien (68 years old, living in Son Trung village, Dak Gan commune) shared that to save the garden, Ms. Lien's family was forced to buy water from lakes and wells of some households in the area at a price of 50,000 VND per hour.
Even the family of Mr. Hoang Dinh Hao (72 years old, Son Trung village, Dak Gan commune) invested in drilling a 50m deep well in the hope of finding a water source. However, the well water is only enough for daily activities, unable to meet irrigation needs. Mr. Pham Minh Trung (58 years old, village 8, Duc Manh commune) sadly shared that the irrigation reservoir is still dry. To save 1 hectare of durian intercropped with coffee and pepper, Mr. Trung's family has to stay by the Manh Thang Cooperative dam, taking advantage of every drop of water seeping from the reservoir, from small streams, but it is only enough to irrigate for 30 minutes and then dry up again. In addition, squeezing and storing every drop of water is difficult, but transporting water to the fields is a big challenge. People have to use pumps to transfer water from the place where they buy it to another reservoir several kilometers away, then continue pumping it to irrigate the crops.
With no other choice, many households in Duc Thanh village (Duc Manh commune) had to hire machines to dig ponds and chisel rocks, spending 20-30 million VND to find water sources, but the results were still not positive. Along the fields, a series of deep ponds were dug close together, but not all of them had water. According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Mil district, up to now, there are 9 irrigation works in the district that have run out of water, including: Team 35 Lake, Team 40 Lake, Dak M'bai Lake, Tang Gia Lake, Dak Loou Lake (Dak Lao Commune); Manh Thang Cooperative Dam, Team 3 Lake, Y Ren Dam (Duc Manh Commune); Dak Gan Forestry Lake (Dak Gan Commune). If the weather is not favorable, the heat continues for a long time, and there is no rain, drought and localized water shortages will occur in the area.
