American golfer Jordan Spieth hit the ball into the rain gutter on the roof of the clubhouse near the 18th hole, round 3 of the 2024 Texas Open, when he kept hitting to the left even though the fairway leading to the target was on the right.
Spieth chose a puzzling strategy on the April 6 par-5, which was a straight shot. Spieth first hit the fairway but the ball bounced off a tree in the wasteland to the left of the fairway. Instead of hitting it back to the fairway to be safe, he continued straight, risking a trip through the woods. That way, the ball traveled 80 yards into a drainage ditch.
At this point, the obstacle left the Texan golfer with only one direction to play. Stuck like that, he swung the club with all his might for the third shot. The ball landed in the gutter on the roof of the clubhouse.

"Can someone please explain to me the intention of the third shot?" Michael S. Kim, an eight-year PGA Tour player, asked on X after watching Spieth handle the final hole of the third round of the PGA Tour this week, at the par-72 Oaks course at TPC San Antonio.
When the ball hit the roof of the clubhouse, Spieth was instructed by the referee to drop a new ball on the wild 124 yards from the target with a clear path. Thanks to that, he reached the green on his fourth shot. However, the ball was 16.1 meters from the target, forcing Spieth to putt three times to get into the hole with a double bogey result. It brought the former world number one's round score to even par, and the tournament score was -3. With this achievement, Spieth ranked T17. If he had kept par on the final hole, he would have been T7 (-5). The top of the table after the penultimate round was -15, belonging to Akshay Bhatia, a one-time winner in 53 tournaments on the PGA Tour, while second place was -11.

Spieth has spent 11 years playing on the PGA Tour, participating in 266 tournaments, winning three majors in 13 cups with a total prize money of nearly 62 million USD and holding the top spot in the world's professional men's golf rankings for 26 weeks.
Spieth won the Texas Open with a score of -18 in 2021, also at TPC San Antonio. This time, Spieth played inconsistently but still won a Lexus SUV when he scored a hole-in-one at hole 16, round 1.
