Artists in Ho Chi Minh City, in a recent discussion "Looking back at the journey of Cai Luong theater from 1975 to present" organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, expressed concerns about copyright in the digital environment.
People's Artist Thoại Miêu said: "The digital environment opens up many opportunities for creation, preservation and exploitation of works and products, but also poses many challenges for both content creators and management agencies, especially in the enforcement of copyright. What is worrying is that copyright infringement in the digital environment is increasing."
Composer Hoang Song Viet was upset: "Even with my own compositions, if someone quickly registers and takes my copyright, I will lose everything."
At the international conference on copyright enforcement in the digital environment organized by the Copyright Office (under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in coordination with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea from June 17 to 21, with the participation of delegates and representatives from 15 countries around the world and international experts, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho An Phong emphasized: "Vietnam is interested in developing cultural industries with strong identities. Therefore, there needs to be close cooperation, coordination and timely sharing to protect copyright for each digital content product".
Experts say that Vietnam has the advantage of officially becoming a member of the Copyright Treaty and the Performances and Phonograms Treaty since 2022. This meets the commitments in new-generation free trade agreements, as well as creating an effective legal foundation to protect works and copyrights in a transparent and effective manner, especially in the digital environment.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai said that in the strategy for developing Vietnam's cultural industries until 2030, copyright issues have a great contribution to the domestic economy. Copyright infringement in the digital age is mainly manifested in two ways: Illegal website operators and illegal users.
"Why can't we stop websites from stealing the intellectual property of artists? Is it because of the application of modern digital technology that it is difficult to block and monitor illegal websites? So we need to soon have international cooperation to prevent this consequence" - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai suggested.
Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong proposed a fundamental solution to enforce copyright: "It is necessary to soon have a plan to review and perfect the legal system; promote propaganda and dissemination of legal regulations; enhance capacity for management agencies, invest in facilities, apply information technology; organize collective representation of copyright and related rights...".
According to experts, it is important to identify policy development trends and technological solutions to deal with copyright and related rights infringements in the digital environment.
"Ho Chi Minh City is a major cultural center of the country, so it is necessary to implement many cooperation programs in copyright management and enforcement in the digital environment in Ho Chi Minh City" - Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong said.
Insiders also expressed concerns about the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), which will pose a challenge to copyright-related issues.
