Hanoi After receiving stem cell injections at a spa to rejuvenate her skin and reduce scars, a 30-year-old woman sweated and had high blood pressure and was taken to the Central Dermatology Hospital for emergency treatment.
The doctor diagnosed the patient with anaphylactic shock, and after receiving timely emergency treatment, he recovered. On January 12, Dr. Vu Thai Ha, Head of the Department of Stem Cell Research and Application, Central Dermatology Hospital, said that it is currently unclear what type of "stem cells" the spa injected into the patient, whether they were really stem cells, so it is impossible to determine the cause of the patient's anaphylactic shock.
According to Dr. Ha, the end of the year is the time when the demand for beauty increases. Services that are often prioritized include botox injections, fillers, mesotherapy or thread lifts... due to their quick recovery time. Beauty salons launch many promotional programs to stimulate demand. Many of these salons advertise "painless, swelling-free beauty treatments", attracting many women to use their services.
"Near Tet, the Central Dermatology Hospital often receives cases of people using services at unqualified spas and beauty salons, then suffering complications and having to go to the hospital to remedy the consequences," said Dr. Ha.

Before the above patient, a 20-year-old female student came to the Central Dermatology Hospital to ask for advice on fat-dissolving injections in many areas such as the jaw, thighs, calves, abdomen... to lose weight. The doctor refused to perform the procedure, explaining that fat-dissolving injections should not be performed on a large area because of the high risk of complications.
However, the girl still researched online, hid from her family and went to a private cosmetic facility for "painless, safe, no-rest-time injections of fat-dissolving essence". After injecting many fat-dissolving injections into the thighs, calves, abdomen and both sides of the jaw, the intervention areas were swollen and painful beyond treatment, the patient arrived at the hospital in a state where the fat-dissolving injection sites had formed abscesses. The doctor had to incise the abscesses, drain the pus, and clean them, some abscesses spontaneously ruptured, leaving many scars.
"Any surgical intervention or procedure has the risk of complications, so it is necessary to select and prescribe the right patient, and advise the patient to consider the pros and cons," said Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Central Dermatology Hospital, adding that it is necessary to be careful with advertisements for fat-dissolving injections and fat-reducing essence injections. In Vietnam, the Ministry of Health has not licensed any drugs for fat-dissolving injections.
Doctors recommend that people choose licensed beauty services and perform them at reputable medical facilities with professionally trained doctors to avoid losing money and getting sick. Fillers such as fillers and botox used in the right type, in the right dosage, and with the right technique licensed by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization will be good for the skin. Using them incorrectly or performing the procedure in unqualified places will lead to infections, lumps, and complications.
