Agricultural production gradually overcomes drought and salinity

BDK - Up to now, the province has experienced the two deepest saline intrusions of the 2024-2025 dry season (late February, early March and from March 21 to 27, 2025). It is forecasted that in the coming time, saline intrusions will be less profound than the last two. In the province, saline intrusion has occurred but has not significantly affected crops and livestock. Water sources for production and daily life for people are guaranteed, as sectors, levels and people are proactive in prevention work.

Farmers proactively source water to take care of vegetables during the drought and salinity season.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) Bui Van Tham said that the agricultural sector has promptly had solutions to cope with the drought and salinity in the dry season of 2024 - 2025. These include solutions on irrigation and basic construction; recommending people to plant crops according to the crop calendar and in accordance with the water supply capacity of each region; using varieties adapted to drought and salinity conditions; applying scientific and technical advances in the field of cultivation and care of crops in conditions of lack of fresh water; automatic irrigation, drip irrigation, misting... to save water; recommending the level of salinity tolerance of some common crops so that people know and get water for irrigation appropriately; resolutely not allowing people to produce in areas at risk of water shortage. In addition, the sector also issued a handbook on information and propaganda on drought and salinity in the dry season of 2024 - 2025. Thereby, bringing about remarkable results.

Grasping the forecast information that the drought and salinity this dry season is not severe, people planted rice for the 2024 - 2025 Winter-Spring rice crop. The total area planted and harvested is 12,401 hectares, 2.19 times higher than the same period. The output reached 61,840 tons, 2.48 times higher than the same period.

Coconut trees have gradually affirmed their adaptability to climate change. Currently, raw coconuts are being exported to the Chinese market, so people are more confident in switching from fruit trees and ineffective rice to coconut cultivation, leading to an increase in coconut acreage and output compared to the same period last year. The total area is about 79,744 hectares. The output harvested in the first quarter of 2025 is about 181.4 million fruits, an increase of 1.4% over the same period, reaching 25.52% of the plan. The price of raw dry coconuts is fluctuating from 130 - 150 thousand VND/12 fruits.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Huynh Quang Duc, the situation of coconut pests has been controlled. The whole province has 3,166.5 hectares infected with coconut beetles, a decrease of 316 hectares compared to the same period. The area infected with black-headed caterpillars was the highest in the first quarter of 2025 at 495.74 hectares; the cumulative recovery area from the beginning of 2025 to present is 137.03 hectares. Vegetable production is favorable. The area of ​​various vegetables is 1,141 hectares, an increase of 0.97% over the same period, reaching 27.49% of the plan. The output is about 24,060 tons, an increase of 1.1% over the same period, reaching 25.82% of the plan.

Livestock farming is stable, with no dangerous epidemics. Most common diseases are treated promptly. The total herd of cattle is currently 210,650, down 3.22% over the same period. The total herd of poultry is 5.52 million, down 6.54% over the same period. The total herd of pigs is about 415 thousand, up 7.35% over the same period.

Aquaculture continues to develop. The total farming area is 33,219 hectares, up 8.74% over the same period. The total harvested output is 120,640 tons, up 4.15% over the same period. The area of ​​intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming is 4,110 hectares, up 0.98% over the same period. High-tech shrimp farming in the first quarter of 2025, newly developed 138 hectares. Intensive pangasius farming has an estimated stocking area of ​​174 hectares; harvested output is about 18,500 tons, down 60.43% over the same period; raw pangasius prices range from 30 - 32 thousand VND/kg. Giant freshwater prawns are preparing for the stocking season, with an area of ​​about 260 hectares, up 15.29% over the same period, harvested output is 306 tons.

The output of aquatic products reached about 58,110 tons, up 1.01%. The total number of registered vessels was 3,721; of which, 2,021 were offshore fishing vessels. The activities of production and business establishments at fishing ports were stable, with the total number of vessels loading and unloading aquatic products reaching 660 turns/6,957 tons.

“In the coming time, the province will focus on implementing synchronous and effective solutions to prevent water shortages and saltwater intrusion, and not cause damage to production. Regularly maintain and ensure good operation of the equipped RO water filtration systems. Continue to mobilize and support the development of concentrated agricultural production areas. Well implement the agricultural restructuring plan associated with new rural construction, the OCOP Program and complete the value chain of key products of the province, the aquaculture development program...”.
