Agricultural production adapts to climate change

Agricultural production is the sector most heavily affected by climate change with extreme weather patterns such as: severe cold, severe cold, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, heavy rain causing flash floods, localized flooding, landslides... degrading the natural ecosystem as well as destroying crops and livestock, making the agricultural sector vulnerable.

In order for agriculture to develop in a balanced manner, ensure food security, and protect the environment, research and development of smart agricultural methods that adapt to climate change and epidemics is an urgent requirement today. In recent times, Phu Tho province has implemented many models and methods of agricultural production that adapt to climate change to ensure people's lives, contribute to economic growth and social stability.

Agricultural production adapts to climate change

The model of converting crop varieties, planning, concentrated planting, and forming specialized vegetable production areas in Lam Thao brings high economic efficiency, sustainability, and adaptation to climate change.

In particular, in the field of cultivation, the agricultural sector and localities have strengthened inspection of actual production, directed to ensure the crop calendar; guided technical measures to care for rice and other crops, fruit trees in the flowering and fruiting stages. At the same time, promote restructuring of the cultivation sector, develop and improve the quality of key crops, focus on applying production according to safe processes; organize production towards large-scale commodities, focusing on the value chain. The whole province has 2,400 hectares of crops certified by VietGAP, 29 hectares of organic certified.

Notably, the provincial Department of Agriculture has also researched and introduced large-scale cultivation of a number of new high-quality rice varieties with good growth and development and high economic value. According to statistics, the rate of high-quality rice varieties put into cultivation in the whole province is 55%; the locality has 157 high-quality rice growing areas with an area of 9,600 hectares. Along with that, to increase the value of agricultural production, adapt to climate change, solutions focusing on developing key crops, converting crops on inefficient rice land have also been applied and achieved efficiency. Up to now, the locality has formed 445 concentrated cultivation areas of key products with advantages of the province with an area of 19,600 hectares.

Along with rice production adapting to climate change, models of safe vegetable production, organic vegetables in greenhouses, net houses using hydroponics, drip irrigation, etc. are gradually becoming popular in the province. In Lam Thao district, many agricultural production models adapting to climate change have been actively implemented and have brought high efficiency. Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the district Dang Thi Thu Hien said: The District Party Committee issued Resolution 04 dated January 8, 2021 of the District Party Executive Committee on developing sub-urban commodity agricultural production in the period 2020 - 2025 in the area. This is a premise for the district to implement sustainable agricultural production models for high economic efficiency, adapting to climate change. The district has focused on directing the development of high-quality rice and vegetable production areas, concentrated scale in the direction of commodities; Promote mechanization in production stages, prevent pests and diseases with drones... to free up labor, reduce costs, protect the environment, improve production efficiency; strengthen production linkages, and consume safe vegetables... Up to now, Lam Thao has built and formed commodity production areas and built brands for agricultural products with strengths such as high-quality rice and safe vegetables.

Along with that, in forestry production, the large timber forest model implemented also contributes significantly to adapting to climate change. Comrade Truong Quang Dang - Head of Forest Development Department, Forest Protection Department said: With a 10-year business cycle, large timber forests yield 18m3/ha/year, the value reaches 190-200 million/ha/10-year forest business cycle. The economic efficiency is many times higher than planting small timber forests. Large timber forests also have the ability to absorb a lot of carbon, contributing to protecting the ecological environment and combating climate change. Currently, this model is being replicated throughout the province with a large timber development area of 18,900ha, of which, intensive large timber afforestation is 15,300ha; converting large timber plantations for business is 3,600ha.

In the coming time, along with raising public awareness and community-based disaster risk management, the province will continue to focus on disaster prevention and climate change adaptation solutions for agricultural production. The construction and replication of livelihood models must ensure that they meet the needs of producers according to the socio-economic characteristics of each locality, develop in the direction of goods linked to product consumption, and apply technical measures to produce products according to VietGAP, organic, and circular standards to minimize the impact of climate change. Localities need to promote restructuring of the agricultural sector towards increasing added value and sustainable development, shifting from traditional production to climate change adaptation, and forming smart agricultural models to reduce risks and be environmentally sustainable.
